Julian Harnish, Bluffton High School student, will perform a Mother's Day piano recital at Yoder Recital Hall at 7 p.m., Sunday, May 13.

He will play works by Bach, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy and Mozart. The recital is free and open to the public. Donations will be taken for the Bluffton Food Pantry.

As part of the on-going art gallery at the Mennonite Memorial Home, local artists Lois and Gary Wetherill have a variety of their work on display.

On the third floor at MMH, Lois has a sampling of her 'Penny Rugs' that she has created. Based on both traditional and contemporary designs, Lois' 'Penny Rugs' are completely hand-sewn using wool and wool felt.

You are at Duke. Tell us about your work there.

I am the Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University, an organization that provides about 300 courses per year in the humanities, sciences, and wellness to 1,600 members, most of whom are aged 50 and above. I also teach courses in Celtic culture and religion.

Give us the short version of how you came to Duke.

Bluffton Sportsmen's Club will hold a chicken barbecue during this year's trout derby on Sunday, May 6, according to Tom Augsburger of the club.

Serving starts at 11 a.m. Pickup is at the Sportmen's Club depot on Spring Street. Dinners may be eaten at the derby or take home.

One-half barbecue chicken with green beans, potato, salad and roll is $7. Tickets are available from club members or on the day of the derby while supply lasts.

5 Myles High, Bluffton jazz combo, is The Icon's newest advertiser. The combo performs for wedding receptions, banquets, dances, parties and similar events.

A number of Bluffton University football players did landscaping work at Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton as part of the team's third annual service day April 21. More than 75 team members went to Bluffton's Mennonite Home Communities-also including Maple Crest Senior Living Village-to help with spring cleaning.

The Bluffton University baseball team dropped the series opener at Franklin 4-0 on a rainy Saturday, April 28, 2012. Bluffton saw its hopes for a berth in the Heartland Conference tournament take a huge hit as the Beavers fell to 16-19 overall and 9-11 in the HCAC. Franklin upped its season mark to 26-8 and 14-6 in the conference.

Bluffton University alumnus Todd Hafner, 49, owner of a speciality business that made wood cases and stands and who crafted a cross in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Toledo Catholic Diocese, died Monday, April 23, 2012, in Mercy St. Anne Hospital.

His wife, Lorie, said he was diagnosed March 23 with pancreatic cancer and recently began chemotherapy treatments. However, he died of complications from a blood clot, she said.
