The Earlham College Quakers used a 20-7 run late in the first half to put away Bluffton 67-38 on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013. Bluffton fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the Heartland Conference, while the Quakers upped their season mark to 2-3 and 1-0 in the HCAC.

The Bluffton University men's basketball team opened up Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action in impressive fashion on Wednesday, Dec. 4, dominating Earlham in the paint en route to a 70-45 win. The Beavers took just a five-point lead into halftime, but went on a 16-0 run early in the second period to put away the Quakers.

Ebenezer Mennonite Church Children’s Christmas program will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. in the CMC.  The service includes performances by the Disciple Singers, Cherubs, and Bell Choirs. 

The church is located at 8905 Columbus Grove Bluffton Road, Bluffton.  An afterglow will be held following the program.  Everyone is invited.

Santa's coming back to town on Saturday,  Dec. 7. His visit, sponsored by the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce, takes place at the Shannon Theatre from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

As an added feature, Greg's Pharmacy will take complimentary photos of all youth on Santa's lap.

If you miss Santa this Saturday, no problem, he's returning on Saturday, Dec. 14, for one final visit. On the 14th he'll be in the lobby of First National Bank.

During his Nov. 23 visit, the Icon talked with Santa about lots of Christmas-related things. Here's part of that conversation.

Bluffton resident, Sarah Diller, is one of the Handel "Messiah" soloists this year. The performance is at 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8, in Founders Hall. We had a brief chat with her about the upcoming event. Here's part of our conversation.

What year did you graduate from Bluffton High School?
2007

Rosalie M. Spallinger, 84, died Dec. 4, 2013, at Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora. She was born June 29, 1929, in Lima to the late Daniel and Lilian (Bedford) Clifton. She married Harold Spallinger and he died April 12, 2013.

She retired from RCA Corporation, Findlay, and had previously worked at Triplett Corp., Bluffton.  

Survivors include two sons Lynn (Glenda) Spallinger of Pandora, George (Kathy) Spallinger of Findlay, Ill.; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren.

The Salvation Army has dropped off Toys for Tots donation boxes in the Bluffton Middle School and High School offices.

New unwrapped toys can be dropped off at both destinations through Thursday, Dec. 12.

The middle school Student Senate is sponsoring a food drive until Dec. 12.  Students may donate non-perishable food items (no glass, please).  All donated items will go directly to the Bluffton Food Pantry.  Each grade level has a goal.
