Bluffton middle school teacher, Dina Tadena, was recently named the Northwest Region Teacher of the Year at the Ohio Middle Level Association (OMLA) state conference, according to Kyle Leatherman, middle school principal.

She teaches sixth and seventh grade math at the Bluffton Middle School.

Six Ohio regions awarded teachers based on performances both in and out of the classroom. Jay Clark, Van Buren Middle School principal and OMLA board member, presented her with the award.

Bluffton University baseball players and coaches are purposely going bald on Thursday, Feb. 27, to support children with cancer.

Having already raised more than $6,100 for the Vs. Cancer Foundation—which helps fund children’s cancer hospitals and research of potential cancer cures—the Bluffton baseball Beavers will take their support a step further on Thursday, having their heads shaved in solidarity with young cancer victims. Joining them will be Dr. Darryl Nester, a Bluffton mathematics professor whose family, including a young niece, has been touched by the disease.

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 301 North Main Street, Jenera, will hold an Ash Wednesday service on March 5 at 7 p.m. “From Garden to Glory” is the theme of the six Wednesday evening Lenten services. Pastor  Al Schmitzer will preach on “Garden of Repentance” and the choir will sing “The Holy Heart.” A light supper will be served by the Ladies’ Aid from 5:30-6:30 p.m.  Everyone is welcome and the church is handicapped  accessible.

Chef Michael will prepare an Italian dinner this Friday.  It will include Italian garden salad, gnocchi gorgonzola, your choice of lasagna, shrimp pasta, or short ribs in tomato basil sauce, or sole florentine and homemade Italian dessert.

Fat Tuesday & Lenten Specials
Jeanne’s Kitchen will be selling paczki on Fat Tuesday and we will have special Lenten meals for lunch.

Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS) is offering educational scholarships to individuals pursuing health care careers. High school seniors entering college, current college students and BVHS associates are eligible to apply.

A complete list of scholarships, along with applications, deadlines, qualifications and contact information can be viewed at www.bvhealthsystem.org by clicking on the “Scholarships” link under the “Careers” menu.

Those who receive a BVHS scholarship may be required to make a commitment to the organization.

Several youth classes are beginning at BFR.

Basketball Basics introduces the skills of dribbling, passing and shooting as well as modified game play. Basketball meets on Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m. from March 6 through April 3.

OWE Silent Auction:  The OWE silent auction will be held on Friday, March 28, during the Spring Choir Concert at Bluffton Middle School. The students of the Bluffton O.W.E./C.B.I. Programs are conducting an auction event to benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Toledo. There will be over 70 donated items so stop in and make a bid during the evening.

The Bluffton 7th grade girls' basketball team recently wrapped up their season by winning the Northwest Conference Championship game 41-24 over Columbus Grove.

The Lady Pirates went 16-0 for the season, winning their games by an average score of 40-15.
