Three chamber ensembles will join the Bluffton University Concert Band to present a spring instrumental concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25, in Yoder Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
Dr. Roy Couch, visiting assistant professor of music, conducts the Concert Band and coaches the brass quintet that will perform as well. Also on the program are a saxophone quartet and a flute ensemble, both coached by Dr. Adam Schattschneider, professor of music.
Three entrepreneurs with ideas ranging from owning a tailoring shop, offering life coaching and operating a mobile barbecue business are winners in the 2014 Bluffton Center for Entrepreneurs Ropp Triplett Business Plan Competition.
Bluffton resident Rachel Davis, owner of Studio Silhouette, providing tailoring services, is the first-place winner. She will receive $5,000 in business start-up support.
Kathy Burrus, rural Columbus Grove, owner of Green Hope Coaching, offering life coaching, is the second-place winner. She will receive $1,000 in business start-up support.
Bluffton University has announced its 2014 May Day court, which was elected by the student body and will be honored during the annual May Day celebration at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, on the Centennial Hall lawn.
The court includes King Jared Horstman and Queen Lindsay Krohn, both seniors, along with senior escorts Derrick Baksa and Jordan McFarland, senior attendants Tamara Al-Sammarraie and Rachel Duncan, and junior chairpersons Joe Schaer and Sara Klenke.

We are scheduled for April and May and hopefully will continue beyond that. We meet for two hours on the third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room at the library, so that makes the April jam next Thursday, the 17th. The next Maple Crest Senior Living, Bluffton, Sunday buffet is April 27, according to Daren Lee, director of Maple Crest.
The menu includes:
• Raviolo stuffed with grilled vegetables in sun dried tomato sauce
• Chicken parmesan
• Mixed green salad
• Fresh Asparagus
• Garlic breadstick
• Lemon meringue pie
• coffee and iced tea.
The buffet is in the Patio Room at Maple Crest from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is open to all adults 55 and older at a cost of $7.50 per person.
Fairy E. Mesler, 90, died April 17, 2014, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. She was born Sept. 8, 1923 in Bluffton to the late Fred and Esma (Burkholder) Bronson. She married Harvey Mesler and he preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 1993.

On April 9 at the annual Tree City USA awards ceremony, Bluffton was recognized for its 21 years as a national Tree City community.
In 1872 the state of Nebraska adopted a day each year for the planting of trees. Now a worldwide event, this day is known as Arbor Day.
Bluffton Tree Commission members continue to celebrate this day with the planting of Bluffton's 22nd Arbor Day tree. The public is invited to attend at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26th, at Steinmetz Soccer Field, in the concession stand area.
The art students of Krysti’s Music Studio will be showcasing their recent artwork on Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Bluffton Campus Life room, 111 W. College Ave.
Students who will be featured are Danielle Novak, Brooklyn West, and Kaylah Gilmore. Community members are invited to attend and may come and go as they like, to view the artwork and chat with the artists. The students' art teacher is Tori Watkins.
