Isaac Andreas, Bluffton High School senior, is the Icon's student artist of the month. Isaac's art classes taken include Art I, Design I and Ceramics II.

He says that his plans after high school include a gap year with travel and language study, then college.

What you do like abouty art? Isaac's answer: "Art is a fun way to relax and be creative."

Gabe Denecker, senior, is the Bluffton High School  October student of the month. He son of Greg and Christine Denecker.

Gabe is a member of FCCLA and Renaissance Club. He plays basketball for the Pirates. During his freshman year he was the homecoming attendant-escort and this year he was selected as the homecoming king.

 In his spare time Gabe enjoys playing basketball, working out, and spending time with his friends. He is employed at Chiles Laman Funeral Home, Bluffton.

Weekly evening classes from January to early February

In January, Bluffton University will offer a course on mindfulness in the classroom.

Mindfulness is an evidence-based group of practices which cultivate the ability to focus on one’s experience with greater focus, clarity and compassion in the present moment.

Program in school and visits to area retirement communities

Bluffton American Legion Post 382 will observe Veterans Day in several ways next week, according to Dennis Morrison of the post.

The following programs are planned for Friday, Nov. 11.

Larry Core, Thom and Cheryl Craig will show fourth graders at Bluffton elementary how to properly fold the American flag during an 8 a.m. program.

Cheryl will tell what each fold of the flag represents. Then each student will be given a flag and taught how to fold it.

Story time at 10 a.m. Saturday

Shirley's Gourmet Popcorn Co., 117 S. Main St., Bluffton, holds its customer appreciation weekend Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5, according to Pete Suter.

The events and giveaways include:

Maybe just a telescope view - but a good view - Friday night

The ONU Astronomy Club will host a free event for the public at the ONU Observatory on Friday, Nov 4, from 8-10 p.m., according to Dr. Jason Pinkney, professor of Physics and Astronomy.

The theme is "The Blue Planets: Uranus and Neptune." The outermost two Jovian planets both have bluish hues attributed to methane in their atmospheres.  Each planet has an interesting history and unique characteristics.  Uranus is tilted about 98 degrees onto its side so it has the most extreme seasons.

“Rewilding the Way: Break Free to Follow an Untamed God"

Todd Wynward, farmer, wilderness educator and Mennonite minister will discuss “Rewilding the Way: Break Free to Follow an Untamed God” during the Spiritual Life Week Forum at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8 in Yoder Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public. 

The pastor and author of a new book on creation-centered spirituality advocates for an earth-honoring, society-challenging and despair-erasing Christianity.

Do you go into a frenzy when you think about retirement? Do I have enough money to retire? Will Social Security be available? When should I collect Social Security? First National Bank and First National Financial Services are pleased to announce a Social Security Workshop Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 5:30  to 7:30 p.m. FNB’s office, 1630 Tiffin Ave., Findlay.

The workshop will provide general education about Social Security benefits, strategies on how to receive Social Security benefits and will walk through individual options.

Many students come to Bluffton with a career path in mind. Some want to be teachers. Other students want to pursue social work or science. Not many students say, “I want to be an insurance claims adjustor or an insurance underwriter when I graduate.” However, several Bluffton alumni, who are currently thriving in the world of insurance, returned to Bluffton for the Forum “Accidental Career” on Oct. 25 to share the wide array of opportunities available in the industry.
