HANOVER, Ind. - The Bluffton University volleyball team showed its mettle with a five-set victory in a heavyweight battle with Rose-Hulman on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016. Bluffton improved to 22-8 and will move into the HCAC title contest with host and #1 seed Hanover, while Rose-Hulman finished its season with a 15-17 mark.

The Bluffton University football team had little trouble with an overmatched Earlham College squad on a beautiful Saturday, Nov. 5. The Beavers improved to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the Heartland Conference, while Earlham slipped to 0-9 and 0-7 in the HCAC.

Awarded “A” in Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

Blanchard Valley Hospital was recently honored with an “A” grade in the Fall 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from errors, accidents, injuries and infections. 

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,600 U.S. hospitals were graded in Fall 2016, with 844 hospitals receiving an “A.”

Friday, Nov. 11, at First Mennonite Church

The Bluffton University Nutrition Association (BUNA) will hold its annual Harvest Dinner, benefiting both the Bluffton Community Assistance Corporation and the Lima-based Churches United Pantry, from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at First Mennonite Church, 101 S. Jackson St., Bluffton.

This year’s dinner will include homemade soup, bread and dessert. Nonperishable food items will be accepted, as will cash and checks made payable to BUNA. All proceeds will benefit the two food pantries. 

A Life Flight helicopter from the Bluffton Airport landed directly on the northbound lane of Interstate 75 late Friday afternoon (Nov. 4).

The landing was a result of a two vehicle accident, which stopped northbound traffic.

Bluffton EMS, fire and police on the scene

What appears to be a rear-end accident on northbound Interstate 75 has completely stopped traffic in the interstate.

The accident may have occurred around 4:40 p.m. this afternoon. Photos taken by the Icon were at 4:55 p.m. A U-Haul truck has rear-ended another Pro Shear truck just on the north side of the overpass at State Route 103.

• Saturday, Nov. 5, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Sunday, Nov. 6, from 1 to 5  p.m.
• Monday, Nov. 7, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m

Mt. Cory High School graduate, WWI veteran

Ralph Steiner, Jr., 92 died Nov. 3, 2016, at 4:17 a.m. at Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay.  Ralph was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Mt. Cory to the late Ralph T. and Joyce (Amstutz) Steiner. On July 6, 1957, he married Beverly Schutz Steiner who survives.

Ralph was a graduate of Mt. Cory High School and was a life-long farmer. He was a past member of Grace Mennonite Church, Pandora, and College First Church of God in Findlay. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Philippines. 

Gutter cleaning still available, too

Rod Badertscher of B&B Handyman for Hire is now scheduling indoor remodel projects. In addition, the company continues to schedule gutter cleaning.

Three members of the Bluffton High School girls soccer team were picked for North Central Ohio Soccer Association honors.

Sarah Theisen, senior, forward, was named to the first team. Abbie Parkins, senior, forward, and Jadyn Barhorst, senior, goal keeper, were both named to the second team.
