Bluffton’s campus community explores honor in the world

Dr. Jonathan Andreas, associate professor of economics, opened the Civic Engagement lecture at Bluffton University with a simple question: “What makes the world go round?”

“I’m an economist, and I am here to tell you that it is not money,” joked Andreas. Instead, Andreas believes notions of honor hold societies together. “Without some amount of honor, capitalism would fall apart.”

Standing alone on the stage of Yoder Recital Hall, actor Michael Mears, shaking with fear, began to scribble a letter on an imaginary piece of paper. Reciting the words of James Brightmore, a British World War I conscientious objector, Mears revealed the horrors Brightmore was subjected to for refusing military duty. Punishments included solitary confinement in a muddy pit that echoed the horrors of a foxhole.

You’re having a bad day.  You’re feeling not so great and a little bit lonely.

Suddenly, a 4-year-old walks up, grabs your hand and talks non-stop about the truck he saw on the way to daycare.  Maybe it’s the touch, but for a moment, you see that truck through his eyes. . . that great big, beautiful blue truck.

The day just took a turn for the better!

Here's the Cory-Rawson High School band. It's marching in the 1986 Bluffton 125th anniversary parade. Merlin Marshall, director, is with the band, on the left side of the photo.

Merlin's son, John, relates this interesting story about this photo. He says:

"I had forgotten about those beautiful green pants! That was taken on the day of my brother Rick's wedding at Bethel Church on 30, east of 235 outside Ada. That's right, we marched in the parade, went home, cleaned up and got ready for the wedding.  Boy was that a hot day!
