First Pirate to reach podium at the state meet

CANTON – Bluffton High School senior swimmer Jackson Bowlus competed well in two finals races at the Div. II state meet in Canton’s C.T. Branin Natatorium on Friday evening, February 27.

Pirate ace Bowlus earned All-Ohio honors by making it to the podium in the 100-yard backstroke event.

FROM FACEBOOK__The 3rd annual PorchFest will be the last Saturday in August 2026. This date is in line with the International Play Music on the Porch Day.

Organizer Eric Reneker notes, "I will release applications for performers and hosts soon. The target neighborhood will be Main Street and the surrounding streets."

We need volunteers this year for planning and the day of the event. Let me know if you are willing to help with this growing event!"

MEDIA RELEASE__Dr. Chris Morrissey, associate professor of sociology, will present a faculty colloquium titled “Love Your Neighbors—All of Them: Sociological Tools for the Second Great Commandment” at 4 p.m. Friday, March 13.

Morrissey will examine how sociological tools and perspectives can inform inclusive, faithful approaches to community life and social responsibility.

Faculty colloquia at Bluffton University highlight scholarly and creative work by faculty members and provide opportunities for campus and community dialogue.

MEDIA RELEASE__A special midweek Lent service is planned at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran for Wednesday, March 4 at 7:00 p.m. 

Guest pastor Kurtis Freimuth of Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler's sermon is based on Zechariah 1:1-6, with the theme "Return to Me!" Hymns are "Today Your Mercy Calls Us, Before You, God, the Judge of All and God Who Made the Earth and Heaven." 

The ladies of Women's Ministry will serve a free soup and bread supper beginning at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend the services and the supper.

Hummin' & Strummin' Song Circle will be held Mondays, March 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 at 6:00 p.m. This is a relaxed, song-circle style music session and anyone is welcome to join or listen in and come and go as you need. Bring your instrument, voice, or listening ears.

There has been concern about measles cases in various parts of the United States and a significant uptick worldwide. According to the CDC, 2025 was the most active year for measles since 1992, and this trend is continuing into 2026. There were 2280 confirmed U.S. cases in 2025, and as of February 12, 2026, there have been 910 confirmed cases. There have been 5 new outbreaks reported in 2026, and 90% of confirmed cases (822 of 910) are outbreak-associated (62 from 2026 outbreaks and 760 from 2025 outbreaks).
