Beginning the end of June and throughout the month of July, Bluffton Public Library will showcase the talents of local authors through a book display.

As part of the Sesquicentennial, most of the books on display will be available for check-out. A number of non-circulating books will also be displayed and available for in-library browsing.

The local author book display, which includes over 35 titles, may be viewed during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Note: Recently The Icon announced two new staff persons in the Bluffton office of Lutheran Social Services of Northwestern Ohio. Here is a brief history of the organization.

Lutheran Social Services of Northwestern Ohio's ministry began in response to a need for chaplaincy service identified in 1910 by the Fremont Local Conference of the American Lutheran Church.

Dr. Perry Bush

It is not an exaggeration to say that his selection as a Fulbright scholar is a dream come true for Dr. Perry Bush.

"I've been dreaming of doing a Fulbright for 20 years," says the Bluffton University history professor, adding that he thought about it even before that as a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Rev. Charles Warren

The public is invited to a 90th birthday celebration for Rev. Charles Warren, on Sunday, June 19, at Ebenezer Mennonite Church.

His actual birth date is Sept. 4, 1921, but his children are planning to be in the Bluffton area for several days in June.

The husband of Rev. Warren's youngest daughter, Paul Windsor, will bring a special message on June 19 at Ebenezer Mennonite Church during the Worship Gathering beginning at 10:15 a.m.

The Rockport United Methodist Church will hold its annual homemade ice cream social on Friday, July 8.

The menu will consist of homemade ice cream, barbecue and chicken sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad, perfection salad, pies, cakes, coffee and punch. Serving will start at 5p.m.

The church is located at 5505 Rockport Road. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The mysterious identity of a young Arab lesbian blogger who was apparently kidnapped last week in Syria has been revealed conclusively to be a hoax. The blogs were written not by a gay girl in Damascus, but a middle-aged American man based in Scotland.

Former Bluffton resident, Tom MacMaster, a 40-year-old Middle East activist studying for a masters at Edinburgh University, posted an update declaring that, rather than a 35-year-old feminist and lesbian called Amina Abdallah Araf al Omari, he was "the sole author of all posts on this blog".
