Nicholas H. Spurck, 81, of Arlington died on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018. He was born in Galion, Ohio, on Jan. 3, 1937, to the late Hotch H. and Violet M. Spurck. Nick married Shirley A. Gibson on Aug. 27, 1960 and she preceded him in death on March 19, 2011.
Senior Isaac Zickafoose (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge) headlined the 2018 All-Heartland Conference football team that was announced on Wednesday, Nov. 14.
The HCAC Defensive Player of the Year was one of nine Beavers to be recognized when the post-season hardware was handed out. Bluffton had five players land on the Second Team and three more earned Honorable Mention recognition.
The Second HCAC Defensive Player of the Year award for Zickafoose also marked the fourth time in five years that a Beaver has taken home the top HCAC honor on the defensive side of the ball.
Beth Raeburn, Tim Closson and Greg Denecker, representing Bluffton elementary school, traveled to Washington, D.C., last week to receive the U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon Award.
Bluffton elementary is one of only 16 schools in Ohio to receive the award.
Only 349 schools (300 public, 49 private) nationwide received the award out of 130,000 schools in the United States.
A Cherry Street railroad crossing upgrade is underway this week. The time is up on the crossing guards originally installed in the 1930s or 1940s. The gates once stopped traffic for fast moving Nickel Plate Road freight pulled by Lima-built steam locomotives, and for passenger trains on their way from Cleveland to St. Louis.
Adult class registration is underway for Session 4 programs at Bluffton Family Recreation, according to Daniel Tinch, executive director.

Bluffton High School scholastic bowl team is runner-up in this year's Northwest Conference competition.
Ada won the competition with a 8-0 record in matches held at Lincolnview High School on Nov. 10.
Crestview and Bluffton tied for 2nd with 6-2 records in the competition followed by Spencerville, Columbus Grove, Allen East and Paulding (tie), Lincolnview and Delphos Jefferson.
