Bluffton’s National Night Out gets bigger and better every year, according to Matt Oglesbee, Bluffton police sergeant.

The Bluffton and Pandora police departments Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bluffton Community Swimming Pool, host the third annual night out.

"The purpose of National Night Out is to build strong partnerships between the police departments and the communities they serve so please come and interact with your local officers," Oglesbee told the Icon.

Here's the answer to the question: Where to the Pirates play this fall?"

Alex Hanna, Bluffton High School athletic director, provided the Icon with the complete schedule for high school, junior varsity and junior high sport teams.

In addition, viewers can access sports contests by checking the Icon's Sports Calendar. You can access it by hovering your cursor over "Calendar" in the black scoll bar at the top of the Icon. A "Sports Calendar" will open.

Members of the Gardeners of the Bluffton Pandora Area will make flowerpots and other ornamental garden objects at its 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2, meeting at the Victoria Zeits residence.

Members will use the hypertufa method for their creations. A definition of hypertufa and description of ingredients is inside this month’s club’s newsletter, which is an attachment at the bottom of this story.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced recently that 762 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2015-2016 season. This number breaks the previous year's total of 757 to set an all-time high.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Bluffton Family Recreation offers several options for keeping active in August, according to Joseph Beagle, director. Here of some of those program options:

Girl Scouts Summer Series
Aug. 8-12

Girls in grades Kindergarten through sixth may participate in a Girl Scout Summer Series held at BFR from 9 to 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Aug. 12.

The series theme is “It’s Your Planet – Love It!” Activities include discovering what real scientists do, exploring wonders of science with hands-on activities and learning the scientific method.
