A Northwestern University undergraduate first got Dr. Ken Bain’s attention because he hadn’t read a book assigned by Bain for a history course.
But given a second chance by the instructor, the student went well beyond simply finishing an assignment. He “developed a deep commitment, and out of that commitment came his devotion to deep learning,” said Bain, who cited the story in his 2012 book, “What the Best College Students Do.”
The Bluffton High School volleyball team is still looking for its first win of the season. Bluffton lost to Arlington 3-0 on Sept. 2. Game stats follow:

Fall classes are forming now for “Music Together, The Joy of Family Music,” a program of music and movement classes for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergartners, according to Laura Hartzler.
Fall classes include 10 weeks of classes that take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from Sept. 30 through Dec. 2. Classes are held in the basement of First Mennonite Church, 101 S. Jackson St., Bluffton.
