University ends fiscal year with gains in fundraising, operations
Bluffton University's fiscal year ended June 30 and, for the ninth straight year, Bluffton alumni, faculty, staff, parents and friends contributed more than $1 million to the Bluffton Fund that helps underwrite annual operations.
"Gifts to the Bluffton Fund provide essential support for instruction, academic support and financial aid. During a challenging economic time, we are thankful for the generosity of Bluffton's alumni and friends who make a difference in the lives of our students," said Dr. Hans Houshower, vice president for advancement.
The fiscal year ended with slightly more than $1,065,000 in gifts to the Bluffton Fund, an increase of $30,000 from the previous year, as well as $2,724,000 in total gifts, an increase of $475,000.
Included in total giving was more than $500,000 in bequests received during the year, which enabled an increase in the university's endowed funds for student scholarships and faculty research.
"Bluffton is able to maintain and extend its distinctive educational mission because of the financial support we receive from many alumni and friends through annual giving and through estate commitments, and we are most grateful for that support," said Dr. James M. Harder, president.
"Along with our continuing efforts to be careful stewards of resources and to contain costs, these gifts make it possible for more students to experience a Bluffton education."
While the fiscal year-end budget numbers are not yet final, the university is projecting a modest net gain in operations for the 2009-10 fiscal year.
