Shelly Miller bike-public safety award recipient
Shelly Miller of Bluffton was presented the Bike – Public Safety Award by the Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition-FAPA-FOP. She was nominated for the award by Chief Joe Kitchen from Bath Township Fire/EMS.
The presentation was made during a Sept. 20 award luncheon at the Fraternal Order of Police Lima Lodge 21.
Hope Hannah, Bluffton police officer, also received an award. Click here for that story.
Miller, on the Allen County Public Health Department staff, is also project coordinator for the Creating Healthy Communities (CHC) Grant Program.
She spearheaded the MOVE Safe campaign developed from funds received by ODOT for active transportation programming. Allen County is one of 10 projects that received award.
The funds awarded to Allen County train law enforcement officers on the rights and responsibilities of all road users, hosting a law enforcement bike and pedestrian safety course for police.
The program also educates the community on bike and pedestrian safety.
Miller has assisted a number of worksites with support for an active commute and has placed a number of bike racks throughout communities in Allen County at worksites, community organizations and schools.
She has worked on the CHC program since 2010, which has always had a focus on active commute and improving bike and pedestrian infrastructure in Allen County.
Shelly also works with the Allen County Bike and Pedestrian Task Force since its inception in 2012. Its law enforcement bike and pedestrian training included officers from four different departments in Allen County, including Bluffton.
