May Day weekend is a Bluffton University tradition with events dating back a century, including a theatrical production that ultimately became the May Day musical.

Beginning with May Day 1915, early theater productions at Bluffton featured Shakespeare “on the green.” Musicals were introduced in the ‘50s, notes Dr. Melissa Friesen, professor of theatre and communication.

Vocalist Ashley Musgrave will present her Bluffton University junior recital at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, in Yoder Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

Musgrave, a mezzo-soprano from Ada, Ohio, will sing numbers by Mozart, Ravel, Brahms and Bach, accompanied by pianist Ana Yoder Coulter. In addition, Dr. Lucia Unrau, a professor and chair of music at Bluffton, will perform “Letting Go,” Musgrave’s composition for piano.
