BHS GRAD FINDS HIS HOME IN LINGUISTICS AT BERKELEY
By Angela Green, BGSU intern
John Sylak, a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of only a few people interested in Lak, which is a language spoken by over 150,000 people living over 6,000 miles away.
A 2003 Bluffton High School graduate, Sylak graduated from The University of Chicago with a degree in linguistics and is currently working toward a master's and eventually a doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley.
Share some of your memories from growing up in Bluffton...school, teachers, friends, silly stories, serious stories, music, sports, etc.
Well, early on I have a lot of memories of living close to the elementary school. I remember watching my siblings going to and from school, then walking there myself when I started kindergarten, and eating lunch at home.
Bluffton is a community of volunteers. Just ask Bev Amstutz. She chairs the Bluffton Cultural Affairs Committee, which is involved in placing the Ream Holiday Folk Art Display on the Bluffton Presbyterian Church lawn each year.
We asked Bev to share with Icon viewers what it takes to put the Ream display in place and keep it in tip-top condition. We never dreamed her list would be this lengthy.
For starters, members of the Bluffton Cultural Affairs Committe include, Bev Amstutz, Jeannie Ream, Linda Best, Chris Akerman and Jerry Burkholder.
Bluffton Child Development Center pre-kindergarten student Tessah Kitchen shares a recent art work she created with Icon viewers. She is the daughter of Meghan Adams and Shannon Kitchen.
