We didn't count the rings, but we are betting this tree is a centurian. The Buckeye fell during the June 29 severe wind storm. Accompaying this story is a video, which involves a walk around the tree.

Also accompanying this story is a photo taken Oct. 31, 1900, at the dedication of College Hall. there are several trees in the photo. This one would have been small. We can't claim to see it in this photo, but perhaps other Icon viewers see it.

The American Red Cross cooling center in the Multi-Purpose Building of the Hancock County Humane Society will remain open on Thursday, according to Executive Director Todd James.

"Our operation of the cooling center will be decided on a day by day basis, based on the number of people coming to the center each day and the number of homes in the area still without power." James says the center served over eighty meals on the 4th of July.

Dancers' Elite will start its summer classes on Wednesday, July 11. Classes run for six weeks. Classes are in ballet, tap, jazz and tumbling. Ages 3 and up.

Fallen trees, branches, and other debris after the recent storm have many area residents out cleaning up their yards and neighborhoods. The Allen County Health Department is issuing a reminder to all residents to be sure that they are up- to-date on their tetanus vaccination.

Bridge Bereavement Services is offering a "Writing Through Grief" workshop for those grieving the current or past death of a loved one.

The workshop will be held Monday, July 16, and Monday, July 23, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Van Buren State Park, 12259 Township Road 218, Van Buren.

Through this event, participants will use various writing techniques to investigate, express and process grief. No previous writing experience is needed and journals will be provided.
