Previously-undefeated Bluffton was knocked off at Spencerville 35-14 in the Northwest Conference grid opener Friday night, September 10.

The league lidlifter defeat dropped the Bluffton record to 3-1 overall (0-1 NWC), while Spencerville improved to 2-2 (1-0 NWC) with the victory.

Bluffton fell behind 20-0 and could not recover. Spencerville amassed all of its offense running the ball, and controlled the clock without throwing a single pass.

The Bearcats took a 7-0 lead on a Nate Coulter one-yard touchdown run with 3:45 left in the first period, and never trailed.

The Bluffton University volleyball team traveled to Erie, Penn., for a weekend tournament at Penn State-Behrend on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021. Baldwin Wallace took down the Beavers in straight sets before Bluffton dropped the host Lions in five sets.

Baldwin Wallace opened the match with a slim 25-22 victory in the lidlifter before a convincing 25-15 win in set two. The Yellow Jackets closed out the sweep wit a 25-20 win in the clincher.

On Sept. 10, The Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce returned to in-person meetings. Grant Mumaugh and Evan Steiner presented plans and sponsorship opportunities for a disc golf course at Village Park. Full story in Monday's Icon.

The visiting Bluffton boys soccer team lost at Beavercreek 3-1 in a non-league match Thursday night, September 9.

Ninth-ranked Bluffton fell to 4-2-1 with the defeat. The Beavers improved to 4-3 with the victory.

Beavercreek scored first 17:21 into the contest. The Beavers then tallied consecutive goals 63 seconds apart in the 36th and 37th minutes to build a 3-0 halftime lead.

Jude Spallinger scored the lone Bluffton goal 8:08 into the second half on an assist from Landon Novak.

The visiting Bluffton volleyball team swept local non-league rival Cory-Rawson in three sets Thursday night, September 9.

The Pirate girls improved to 5-2 with the 25-7, 25-15, 25-14 win, while C-R falls to 1-5 with the defeat.

Senior middle hitter Kylie Stackhouse led the Pirates with 12 kills and three blocks.

Bluffton senior setter Skyler Scoles dished out 13 assists and served up six aces.

Olivia Hobensack contributed six assists, one block and three aces.
