American gymnast Alec Yoder came close to earning an Olympic medal after being a late addition to the United States trials competition just over a week before.

Yoder is the grandson of a retired Bluffton optometrist.

Originally left off the national teams, he finished fourth in the Olympic trials pommel horse event July 24 at St. Louis, Missouri to qualify as an individual representative of the American team.

Naomi Basinger, 102, passed away August 1, 2021 at Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora. Naomi was born April 16, 1919 in Lafayette to the late Harry and Chloe (Williams) Shrider. On July 13, 1940 she married Orville Basinger who preceded her in death on January 25, 1998.

Naomi graduated from Bluffton High School. She retired from Triplett Corporation, Bluffton. Naomi was an active member of the English Lutheran Church in Bluffton and the Bluffton Senior Citizens. She enjoyed canning, cooking, animals, playing cards and most of all spending time with her grandchildren.

Two celebrate milestone birthdays

In August, Joyce Badertscher and Richard Boehr will both turn 90 years old. Their birthdays will be celebrated with a Red Rose and a Life Membership at the Monthly Dinner Meeting.

Bluffton’s 7th annual National Night Out will take place Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Bluffton Community Swimming Pool. Learn more about the event.
