Four-year-old Maelene Lawrence of Carey has a fish story to tell for the rest of her life. She caught this 16-inch trout at the Bluffton Sportsmen's Club trout derby on Sunday. It wasn't trout number 1, but it was tagged and worth $20. Her fish was tag 93, and her prize was from the UAW Local 1327. No one caught Sudden Sam, this year's number 1 trout derby the derby.
M. Eilene Mericle, 93, died May 4, 2017, at 7:47 p.m. at Willow Ridge - Betty House in Bluffton. Eilene was born April 4, 1924, in Orange Township near Bluffton to the late Ross and Arah (Ewing) Tripplehorn. On Sept. 17, 1942 she married Gerald "Gene" Mericle who preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1997.
Eilene was a homemaker and had also worked at Gillette Bakery and Crow's Dime Store both of Bluffton. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bluffton and the Bluffton Senior Citizens.
Bluffton voters will select four candidates in a 10-candidate race for Bluffton council seats on the Nov. 7 general election. This is the highest number of candidates in several elections.
The four top vote-getters will win four-year council terms beginning Jan. 1, 2018, and ending Dec. 30, 2021.
The following names will be printed on the Nov. 7 ballot. Write-in candidates may still file petitions to run, but their names will not be on the ballot. The write-in filing deadline is in August.
The one-year anniversary for Natalie and John Mueller's ownership of The Sports Warehouse included a grand opening of the business with a name change. The business is now The Scoreboard. It continues to offer spiritwear and custom apparel. Bluffton chamber held a ribbon cutting for the new name. FROM THE ADA ICON - Officials determined that a methamphetamine lab caused the fire that extensively damaged a structure at 409 N. Main St., Ada, on Wednesday afternoon.
Officers arrested an occupant of the apartment, Karen Troglin, for assembly and/or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs. Other charges may be added in the future since the case remains under investigation.
