About women who painted glow-in-the-dark watches and clock faces

Brianna Lugibihl ‘17, Brista Drake ‘19, Carrie Blust ‘18 and Emily Short ‘17 play “radium girls” in Bluffton University’s fall play, “These Shining Lives.”

Based on true events, the play tells the story of the women who painted glow-in-the-dark watch and clock faces in the 1920s and 1930s using radium-based paint.

Bluffton's new bike and pedestrian path is open for business. The Lions Way Augsburger Road Path was dedicated on Monday. It stretches from Bentley Road to the Bluffton University Nature Preserve, Riverbend and Maple Crest. Watch the Icon for more details and photos.

She and her husband, Harold, owned Balmer's, women's clothing store; Greg's Pharmacy located there today

Retired Bluffton business woman Anna Ruth Balmer, 93, of Bluffton, died Oct. 31, 2016, at Maplecrest, Bluffton.

She was born April 30, 1923, in Nappanee, Indiana, to the late Ezra and Anna (Christophal) Mullett. On Dec. 5, 1943, she married Harold Balmer who preceded her in death on April 28, 2012.

Anna was owner and operator of Balmer’s, Bluffton. She was an active member of First Mennonite Church, Bluffton.  Anna enjoyed sewing and polka dancing.  She designed the outfits used for the Maypole dance during May Day at Bluffton University.

Long touchdowns were the name of the game Friday night. 

Unfortunately for the Bluffton squad, the Columbus Grove Bulldogs had a few more explosive plays. Bluffton closed out their 2016 campaign with a 46-19 loss at the hands of Columbus Grove.
