Monday morning quarterback - the Super Bowl and all its side shows
By Mitchell Gatzke, Icon sports anaylist
As a true football fan I was extremely entertained while watching the Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the New York football Giants. However, other than the game itself, the event was quite a let down.
The halftime show at the Super Bowl is always consistent- consistently terrible. Each year it seems like the committee in charge of putting together this spectacle is confused about who they want to perform. Their solution is to gather a slue of random acts and throw them onto the stage together for 30 minutes of distraction from the biggest football game of the year.
This year's event was no different. We witnessed Madonna headline the show with contributions from LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A. and Cee Lo Green. M.I.A. made the most of her spot by making an obscene gesture at the camera for millions upon millions of people all around the world to see. Not exactly the publicity they were looking for, almost as bad as Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction a few years ago. The halftime show always boils down to a half hour of wishing the game was back on already.
There are a lot of people that tune in not to watch the game, but the commercials. This year was pretty disappointing for them as there were only a select few worth looking up on YouTube.
The only true standout to me was the halftime commercial with Clint Eastwood. For the last two years, Chrysler has put on great commercials that give the people of Detroit, and surrounding areas, something to be proud of.
They did this well for the second year in a row but one has to wonder how long they can continue to run these ads. Other than that one, there weren't many great commercials like there usually are during the Super Bowl.
The game itself was great. It was close throughout, there were many great plays and there was a fantastic finish. Eli Manning, once again, led his team down the field and score a touchdown to take the lead with just about a minute left. Tom Brady then attempted to do the same but was unable to get his team into the end zone for the victory.
There were numerous dropped passes by the New England receiving crew, which was somewhat uncharacteristic of them. These passes, if completed, could have easily changed the complexion of the game. In the end the Patriots were unable to capitalize on their opportunities to seize victory.
All in all, the Super Bowl was slightly above good but not quite great. The actual game was fantastic, but there were many disappointing factors that hurt the overall presentation of the Super Bowl, including the halftime show and the commercials.
Hopefully these things get fixed for next year's Super Bowl and it is even better than this year's.
