The Bluffton University men's basketball team went on the road after a 14-day break and took down Franklin College 70-65 for its first HCAC victory of the season on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022. Bluffton improved to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the Heartland, while Franklin fell to 7-9 and 3-5 in the conference.

Kyler Kinn canned two clutch free throws with 22 seconds left to give Bluffton a one-point lead. Carey senior Bryce Conti missed a jump shot that would have won the game, but it rattled in and out.

The Bluffton High School boys basketball team nailed 10 triples to defeat visiting Leipsic 61-49 in a Northwest Conference battle Friday night, January 14.

Bluffton trailed 15-14 after the first period, but then took command with a 17-7 second stanza. Leipsic edged within 43-37 after three quarters. The Pirates pulled away with an 18-12 final period to win by 12.

The Bluffton High School girls basketball team rallied from a big deficit only to lose a 41-39 thriller at first-year league member Leipsic in Northwest Conference play Thursday night, January 13.

Bluffton trailed 11-0 after a scoreless first quarter and faced an uphill climb. The Pirate girls rallied with a 19-point second stanza, putting the score at 23-19 at halftime. 

The teams had an even 7-7 result in the third quarter. Bluffton outscored the Viking girls 13-11 in the fourth quarter, but finished two points shy of Leipsic’s total.

The Bluffton University women's basketball team shook off the rust and parlayed a 20-4 first quarter into a convincing 62-50 victory at Earlham College on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022. Bluffton improved to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the Heartland Conference, while the Quakers remain winless at 0-11 and 0-4 in the HCAC.

The Bluffton High School wrestling team lost a dual match to visiting Bath 39-18 Tuesday night, January 11.

Four Pirate matmen recorded individual wins. Bluffton's Thayne Kleman (113 lbs.) and Kaden Basil (190) were victorious via second-period pins. Pirates Isaiah Mikesell (138) and Jett Blackburn (175) each won by decision. 

The Pirate grapplers are back in action January 21-22 at the 43rd annual Van Buren Invitational. 

Allen East, Arcadia, VB, Carey and Columbus Grove are among the teams scheduled to compete.
