ODOT holds two hiring events for seasonal positions

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to get ready for winter operations.

Throughout October, ODOT District 1  will hold two hiring events to fill approximately 44 winter seasonal positions available across the region.

The schedule of events is as follows:

• Wednesday, Oct. 2, from noon to 6 p.m. at the ODOT District 1 office, 1885 N. McCullough St., Lima.

• Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2-6 p.m. at the ODOT District 1 Hardin County maintenance garage, 13052 state Route 68, Kenton.

Weekend doctor: Diabetes

Diabetes is diagnosed when a person’s pancreas is unable to produce insulin properly.

Type 1 diabetes is characterized by the destruction of the cells required to make insulin, a hormone that regulates the amount sugar in the blood. Whereas, Type 2 diabetes results from the gradual loss of insulin-producing cells or resistance to insulin throughout the body.

Funeral mass for 106-year-old Bob Blake on Oct. 2

Was a retired supervisor at Lima Ford Engine Plant

Bluffton resident Robert "Bob" Lee Blake, 106, died Sept. 27, 2019, at his residence.  Bob was born Aug. 25, 1913 in Van Wert, Ohio, to the late Earl and Della (Hann) Blake.  On July 23, 1933, he married Dorothy Siniff Blake who preceded him in death on Sept. 30, 1994.

Bob retired from Lima Ford Engine Plant where he was a supervisor.  He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bluffton, enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.

Bluffton Farmers Market vendor of the week

Hot or cold, rain or shine - Bluffton Farmers Market is the place to be on Saturday mornings in town. According to the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce, our town "boasts the best farmers market in northwest Ohio." 

In celebration of our small but mighty farmers market, the Icon will be featuring a market vendor each week over the course of the summer.

This week's feature vendor is Chris Freed.

Quilt raffle to raise funds for Swiss homestead

Saturday during Fall Festival

Bluffton Scrap Artist Quilt club are selling raffle tickets for a quilt Saturday, Sept. 28, as part of Fall Festival activities. All proceeds from the quilt raffle will go to the Swiss Community Historical Society and Homestead, 8350 Bixel Road. 

The quilt was made and donated by Lin Rumer, Bluffton, and is a combination of pinks and whites. 

Raffle tickets cost $1 or 6 tickets for $5. Tickets can be purchased at the Schumacher Homestead on Saturday.  The drawing will be at 3 p.m. You do not need to be present to win.
