Public library's August digital newsletter now on the Icon

August is a busy month for the Bluffton Public Library.

There's a Bigfoot night, three visits from Teddy of Paws to Read, an opportunity to make a boat, create some spray paint art, and lots more.

Gardeners to tour Brauen's gourd farm Aug. 4

Gardeners of the Bluffton Pandora Area will tour Don and Jody Brauen’s gourd growing and crafting farm business at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Free school supplies available on Aug. 1

Free school supplies are available to children on the free and/or reduced lunch program within the Bluffton School District.

Distribution is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 1, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 223 W. College Ave., Bluffton. Call 419-358-5641 for details.

This is a program of the Bluffton Area Ministerial Association.

Can you identify this intersection? It's from 1973

This photo requires a little imagination. Dick Boehr snapped the picture on Feb. 17, 1973. His view is from what is today the A to Z Meats property on the southwest corner of Main and Jefferson.

He is aiming at the Sohio service station, across the street (most recently Kirtland's Auto Sales). the two houses north of Sohio are about to be razed. In their place will be a Lawson's   store. It eventually will be owned by Kirtland's Auto.

Those are some pretty big gas hogs in the photos.

$100,000 scholarship goes to PGHS's Olivia Velasquez

A Pandora-Gilboa High School graduate is headed to Harvard thanks to a $100,000 RMHC/HACER National Scholarship.

Olivia Velasquez, the 2015 PG valedictorian, is the scholarship recipient. She is the daughter of Rick and Amy Velasquez of Gilboa. She is one of only four students to receive the national scholarship.

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and Jerry Lewis McDonald’s representatives presented Velasquez in a formal ceremony last week in the Ottawa McDonald’s.

LuLu's opening day

It was a busy morning at Lu Lu's Diner, 114 E. College Ave., Bluffton. The diner's opening day was on Monday. Lu Lu's is Bluffton's newest business.
