Free yoga class Thursday at BFR

Want to try yoga, but never had the opportunity?

Bluffton Family Recreation offers a free yoga class open to men and women from 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 23.

The class, instructed by Erica Sheehan, takes place at BFR, 215 Snider Road, Bluffton. Call 419-358-4150 for more details.

BFR 5-K moves from Labor Day weekend to Fall Festival in late September

Runners on your mark.

Bluffton Family Recreation moved its traditional Labor Day 5K, to the weekend of the Bluffton Fall Festival, Saturday, Sept. 24, according to Joseph Beagle, BFR director.

Except for the date change, this year’s race is very similar to previous races. The race starts at 9 a.m. A kid’s fun run and walk is at 10 a.m.

Age groups in the run are:
14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59 and 60 and up.

Race day registration starts for the 5K at 8:30 a.m. and for the fun run at 9:30 a.m.

Here's the registration form for Community VBS in July

Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 8375 Phillips Road, is the host congregation to this summer's community Vacation Bible School.

VBS is from Sunday, July 24 through Thursday, July 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening.

It has classes for preschool through fifth grade. This year's theme is "Deep Sea Discovery - where kids will know that God is always with them!"

Children in VBS will sing at the community worship services on Sunday, July 31, on the Bluffton Presbyterian Church lawn.

Trevor Bassitt Division III state champion 110-meter hurdles

Bluffton High School track fans have lots to look forward to next season.

Competing in the Division III Ohio High School Athletic Association state track meet in Columbus earlier this month, the boys' team scored 15 points placing 12th overall.

• Trevor Bassitt, junior, won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.53 seconds.

• The 4 by 800-meter relay made up of one senior, two juniors and one sophomore finished fourth in a time of 8:08.15.

Four Pirates receive all-NWC softball honors

Four members of the Bluffton High School softball team received all-NWC honors this spring.

They include Sami Fruchey, senior, first team; Taylor Monday, senior; second team; Averey Rumer, freshman, honorable mention; and Katie Prater, freshman, honorable mention.

In voting by Northwest Conference softball coaches for the 2016 softball season senior Jada Preston, a pitcher from Crestview was named Player of the Year.   Columbus Grove senior Brooke Hoffman finished second in the balloting with Spencerville sophomore Kara May finishing third.

Bricker and Bowden named to NWC baseball second team

Two Bluffton High School baseball players were named to the all-Northwest Conference second team this spring.

Players were Matt Bowden, junior,  and Dakota Bricker, sophomore.

In voting by Northwest Conference baseball coaches for the 2016 baseball season. senior Damon Egnor, a pitcher from Paulding was named Player of the Year after being runner-up for that honor last season.  

Crestview senior Colby Clifton finished second in the balloting with Delphos Jefferson junior  Jace Stockwell finishing third.
