Ben Kruse wins the Icon's Golden Globe contest

And, here's an update of our former resident, now in North Carolina

Ben Kruse, formerly of Bluffton and now of Cary, North Carolina, is the winner of the Bluffton Icon Golden Globe contest. He made seven correct selections and one correct tie breaker.

He wins a 1-item, 12-inch Padrone's Pizza, which he wants the Icon to give to Nancy Schweingruber (we will follow his instructions - rather than driving the pizza to North Carolina).

The Golden Globe contest had 25 entries.

Friday AM chamber focus on Jefferson Street project

Representatives of AEP will discuss electrical infrastructure

Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce will get an update on the Jefferson Street-State Route 103 corridor improvements on Friday, according to Paula Scott, chamber CEO.

The 7:30 a.m. meeting is via Zoom. Jesse Blackburn, village administrator, will talk about the improvements taking place this summer.

In addition, he will talk about bicycle-pedestrian pathways and electrical infrastructure. Representatives from AEP will join in that discussion.

MHCO Service Group has April 24 barbecue fundraiser

The Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio Service Group will hold a chicken barbecue fundraiser from with curb pick up 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, April 24, at Bubba C BBQ, 158 N. Jackson St., Bluffton.

Proceeds will support the purchase of a handicap accessible van to help MHCO elders attend area doctors’ appointments and family related trips that would not otherwise be possible.

With the barbecue fundraiser held last year along with support from area businesses, churches, and others the Service Group has raised close to $30,000.

Bluffton Boy Scouts food drive on Saturday

Leave items for pickup on your front porch by 9 a.m.

Bluffton Boy Scout troop 256 will “scout for food” on Saturday, according to Brad Taylor.

Bluffton scouts will canvas the community to pick up donations placed on front porches.

Canned food and non-perishable items may be donated. As in previous years, the scouts are collecting food that will be donated to the Bluffton Community Assistance Program’s food pantry, located in the St. John’s United Church of Christ.

Emmanuel UCC fish fry March 12

Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 8375 Phillips Road, Bluffton, will hold a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, March 12. Tickets are $9 each.

This is a drive-thru take out only (no dining in) and you may pay with you pick up your meals. No tickets are needed

Meal includes four pices of fish, cheesy potatoes, green beans, apple sauce, desseert and tartar sauce.

Our Swiss connection - part 17

This is the 17th installment in this series. Click here for the previous installment.
This column’s focus is on John Ulrich Amstutz, a farmer and tradesman, whose farm was located on the south side of the Allen-Putnam County Line Road, just east of where the Suter Morning Star Cider Press is today.

On his farm, John U. had a jewelry shop, clock shop, cider press, cane press for sorghum and a machine shop. He was also an undertaker and made over 400 coffins in 43 years.
