Robert Kreider memorial service Jan. 2 in Newton, Kansas

Robert Stanford Kreider died on Dec. 27, 2015, at his home in North Newton, Kansas.

Robert was born Jan. 2, 1919, in Sterling, Illinois, son of Amos and Stella (Shoemaker) Kreider. In 1921, the family moved to Goshen, Indiana, and in 1926 to Bluffton, Ohio. In 1929, Robert was baptized in the First Mennonite Church, Bluffton.

In 1935, the family relocated to Newton, Kansas, and Robert entered Bethel College where he earned a B.A. in History. In 1941, Robert earned an M.A. in Social Ethics from the University of Chicago Divinity School.

It's Bluffton vs. Arlington in Tuesday's tourney title game

Bluffton faces Arlington in Tuesday’s McDonald’s Holiday Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game at BHS on Dec. 29.

In the opening round:

• Arlington defeated Allen East 69-59
• Bluffton defeated Cory Rawson 61-36

Allen East will play Cory-Rawson in the Consolation game, which is set to begin at 6 p.m., Dec. 29.

The ever-memorable Bluffton Robert Kreider

As a youngster, Robert Kreider lived in Bluffton from 1926 to 1935 when his father pastored First Mennonite Church. After moving away, he returned Bluffton  as a professor, academic dean and later Bluffton College president. In the 1970s he moved to Kansas. Click here for his obituary.

In an opening 1968 school year convocation, Bluffton College President Robert Kreider compared the height of the campus water tower to the timeline of earth’s history.

PTO bakery Bingo asking businesses for raffle prizes

Ready for some Bingo? This kind feeds your hunger and is for a good cause.

Bluffton’s PTO’s annual bakery Bingo is Saturday, Jan. 30, and the PTO needs your assistance.

“One of the most popular aspects of bakery Bingo is the basket raffle, where chances to win themed gift baskets are sold through tickets,” says Tammy Whitlow, Bingo chairperson.

“PTO has received generous support from businesses in the past years for our raffle. We invite businesses to make contributions for this year’s raffle,” she said.

Library staff ready for 2016 - and here's the January plan

The library will be closed on Jan. 1, 2, and 18.  Due dates will be adjusted accordingly.

Bluffton Public Library staff is ready for January. Here's what's on the library's calendar for the first month of 2016.

Warm up with a cup of hot tea.  During Hot Tea Tuesdays, free hot tea and other light refreshments will be available for browsing patrons from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.    

Also on Tuesdays, area teens and tweens (6th grade and up) are invited to Chill Zone.  Come participate in crafts, play games, snack, and talk at 3:30 p.m.
