Pirate boys 2nd at district meet

The Bluffton boys track and field team finished a strong second at the Div. III district meet on a warm Thursday, May 19, and Saturday, May 21, at Ada's War Memorial Stadium.

Columbus Grove won the boys team title with 148 points, while Bluffton came in second with 114. 

Kalida captured the girls crown in a close battle with Van Buren. The Lady Pirates finished a solid sixth out of 18 teams.

Several Pirates posted top-four finishes to make it to the regional meet next week.

1892: Bluffton's worst railroad accident

Imagine an out-of-control and fast-moving freight train colliding into the rear of a mixed passenger and freight train stopped at a station.

That scene describes Bluffton’s most horrific railroad accident and it happened here 130 years ago, in 1892.

The accident killed one person, and caused damages in today’s money amounting to nearly $800,000, almost forced the railroad out of business.  

Bluffton University hurdler shatters record, qualifies for NCAA DIII berth

UPDATE: Gist has qualified for national compettition.

Bluffton University sophomore Desmond Gist (Detroit, Mich./Trenton) traveled to Alliance, Ohio, on Thursday, May 19, 2022 to compete in the 110 meter hurdles event at the Mount Union Last Chance Meet.

He put up a record-setting time for the university and as of 11 p.m. Thursday night, was tied for 18th in NCAA Division III competition. Over the next day or so that status can change.

GROB to hold apprentice orientation and signing day, June 4

GROB Systems of Bluffton will host a 2022 Apprenticeship Class orientation and signing day from 9:00 a.m.-noon on June 4. New apprentices and their families will learn more about what to expect from the GROB Apprenticeship Program, and they will also celebrate each student choosing this path after high school by participating in a signing day photo opportunity.

August 27 Ada football fest to include PPK-sanctioned event

As a part of the 6th Annual Made in Ada Wilson Football Festival, the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce is coordinating a Punt, Pass & Kick USA, Inc. (PPK) competition on the afternoon of Saturday, August 27. Ada VFW Post 9381 is the sponsor for the 2022 PPK competition.

Young football fans will have the opportunity to exhibit their football skills at Ohio Northern University’s Dial Roberson Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the competition will commence at 1:00 p.m.

The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 6-15.
