Riley Creek Arbor food drive underway

Gleaner Life Insurance Society's Riley Creek Arbor at Faith Investment Services, 101 N. Main St., is accepting non-expired non-perishable items for the Bluffton Community Assistance food pantry now through Thursday, Nov. 19. Donations may be made during business hours Mondays through Fridays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

15 Minutes with Dick McGarrity, retiring BCE board member

"I think now is a great time to start a business"

Bluffton Center for Entrepreneurs executive director Paula Scott talked with former BCE board member, executive director, and founder Dick McGarrity. Dick has been term-limited off the board of directors –- but clearly is never limited in his enthusiasm for this 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves entrepreneurs in Allen, Hancock, Hardin and Putnam counties.

Paula: Let’s start at the beginning. How did you become part of the Bluffton business community?

A new book, “Bluffton Anthology – a creek runs through it,” with dozens of short essays about Bluffton, collected by Fred Steiner, will be released in the next few weeks.

“This collection brings together more than a dozen engaging writers whose own Bluffton experiences deserve retelling,” said Steiner.

“For anyone who calls Bluffton home, these stories need no further introduction,” said Steiner, about the book. “For people needing to have Bluffton explained to them, this is a great starting point.”

Patricia Herr was a Bluffton High School graduate

Patricia J. Herr, 92, of Vaughnsville, died at the Hilty Memorial Home in Pandora, Ohio on Monday, Nov. 9, 2020.

Pat was born March 12, 1928, in Bluffton to Waldo and Metta Huber. On April 20, 1947, she married Olan W. Herr, and he preceded her in death. She graduated from Bluffton High School, and was employed at the Vaughnsville School and Sears in Lima.  Pat was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Bluffton.

Nygaard 82nd of 183 runners at state cross country meet

OBETZ - Bluffton sophomore Erik Nygaard finished 82nd in a field of 183 runners at the Div. III state cross country meet on an unseasonably warm Saturday morning at Fortress Obetz in Obetz.

Nygaard finished the 3.1-mile course in a time of 17:14. He ran a 5:11 first mile and was 83rd at that point. He moved up to 76th with a 10:46.4 time at the two-mile mark, and ran 6:27.6 over the final 1.1 miles to drop back six spots.
