Evelyn Steiner was retired after teaching 29 years in Bluffton school system

Evelyn M. Steiner, 93, died Dec. 7, 2013, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. She was born Oct. 13, 1920 in Kingsport, Tenn., to the late Kinder and Elsie (Johnson) Mitchell. On Nov. 1, 1941, she married Charles H. Steiner and he died July 2, 1994.

She retired from teaching after 29 years in the Bluffton and Beaverdam School systems.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Bluffton, where she was very active in the United Methodist Women, a lay leader, choir member, Methodist Conference. She was also a member of Alpha Gamma and Bluffton College Phi Beta Kappa. 

She also did volunteer tutor in the Bluffton Elementary Reading program and would visit AIDS victims in Lima. She especially loved teaching, sewing, quilting, decorating, antiquing, reading, classical music and gardening. She was a graduate of Petersberg, Ind., High School and Bluffton College where she graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Survivors include two daughters Nancy (Ed) Reichenbach and Jana Seckman both of Bluffton; seven grandsons; 13 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson and a brother John Mitchell. Graveside services will take place at a later date.
