Does anyone recognize this Bluffton structure?

First, some hints. It's doubtful that anyone under 55 can identify this building. That means it was razed sometime in the 1960s.

With a smokestack like this, it must have produced lots of power for several buildings.

Too bad there aren't other clues in the photo, except for what appears to be a 1950 or '51 Chevolet parked near the building.

Here's what we have: the Bluffton College power plant. It was located on the Riley floodplain facing College Avenue. Founders Hall would be on the left and up the hill.

Bluffton's "Big Bird"

The cardinal might be the state bird, but the great blue heron is Bluffton's unofficial village bird. For a photo op of this guy, we suggest camping out on a bank of the Riley most anywhere in Bluffton. Or, in the case of this photo shoot, check out the pond in front of The Centre about 10 a.m. each morning. The fishing must be pretty good.

Ada caboose renovation underway

Soon, the caboose in Ada Railroad Park will be back to its original color of deep red.

TJ Painting is finishing the exterior painting, having repainted the inside earlier. The 1941 Pennsy rail car was placed in the park in 1989.

Over the years, it faded to a rusty pink. The caboose is a main attraction in the park and photographed quite often.

The lettering will be applied in the near future. Pennsy caboose #477779 will look as good as new. (Monty Siekerman photo)
