WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The qualified athletes from the Bluffton University men’s and women’s track and field team competed Saturday at Otterbein University in the All-Ohio Championship meet. Not since 2010 have the Beavers brought home an All-Ohio champion, but they did today.

Sophomore Trey Everett (Sidney/Fairlawn) bested a field of 14 quality competitors to win the high jump competition, clearing the bar at 6’ 9.75” to set a new All-Ohio meet record. Earlier in the day he bested his school and personal record in the long jump, placing third in a field of 15, at 23’ 3.50”. Freshman Sarah Hunter (Mt. Blanchard/Riverdale) ran a gutsy race to go for the win against several outstanding upperclassmen, placing third in the field of 14 in 2:19.52, her third sub 2:20 performance in as many efforts.

Sophomore Anna Hairston (Mansfield/Ontario), coming into form in the last several weeks, shattered the school record at 3000 meters, bringing home the school’s first sub-11:00 race, clocking 10:59.31, taking nearly nine seconds off the record set in 2012. Also finishing in points-paying positions were sophomore Terrill Webb (Kenton) with 5th place in the pole vault and junior Edgar Gonzalez (Melvindale, Mich./Melvindale) at 8th place in the weight throw.

“This is Bluffton’s fourth trip to the championship since taking over the helm of the program in 2011,” said Head Coach Karen Brandt, “With the largest group we have had qualified. To come home with a champion is quite a testament to how far the program has come in that amount of time. Trey is a talented athlete, but equally as importantly a fierce competitor who gives all he has in any competition he enters. Likewise, Sarah and Anna had a take-no-prisoners attitude in their races and their results speak for themselves.”

The Beavers travel to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology next Saturday, Feb. 21 to compete in the HCAC Championship meet. Competition begins on the track and in the field at 1:00 p.m.
