Public meetings for village announced

The following meetings for the village have been announced:

Finance Committee - Thursday, Feb. 13 at noon
Streets, Alleys, Lights & Sidewalks Committee - Thursday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m.
Parks & Recreation Committee - Monday, Feb. 17 at noon
Council Meeting - Monday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.

These meetings are open to the public and meet in town hall.

Personal branding talk Feb. 21

Marathana Prothro, assistant professor of communication at Bluffton University, will present the Colloquium, “Inside Job: An Integrated Approach to Personal Branding,” at 4 p.m. on Feb. 21 in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.

Prothro, who received a Bluffton University Research Center Grant to study and develop a book around this topic, says her research has led her a different direction than expected. She will expand upon and share her realizations and outcomes during Colloquium on Feb. 21.  

Joan Fleming 1954-2020

Joan I. Fleming, 65, died on Sunday, Feb, 9, 2020, at 11:33 a.m. at her residence in Lima.

She was born on July 31, 1954, in Lima, to the late Lester and Evelyn (Wright) Fleming. 

She worked in Sales and was a member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church, Lima. 

Joan is survived by her sister, Martha (Kenneth) Fitzpatrick of Springfield, Va.; three brothers: Thomas (Sharon) Fleming of LaFayette, Daniel (Linda) Fleming of Bluffton and John (Debra) Fleming of Harrod; and a sister-in-law, Jane (Ken) Madden of Sidney.

Left the competition in the dust

Bluffton University sophomore Brandon James from Waynesfield is the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week. James took first place at the All-Ohio DIII Track & Field Championships Multi-Events at Denison University over the weekend. He finished with 4,292 points, nearly 100 more than his closest competitor. James won the long jump and the shot put with a second-place finish in the high jump en route to his All-Ohio Multi championship.

Mason Soper led the Pirates with 18 • Levi Hohenbrink nailed 3 second-half triples to tally a season-high 11 points • Jared Piercefield added 10

BLUFFTON - Host Bluffton methodically took down local rival Allen East 62-41 to win a Northwest Conference boys basketball matchup Friday night.

The Pirates improved to 15-4 overall and 5-2 in the NWC with the win. Meanwhile, slumping AE fell to 5-14 and 0-7 in the NWC with the defeat.

Bluffton led 16-9 after the first period as senior Mason Soper poured in a dozen points. But AE stayed within 23-16 at intermission after an even, low-scoring second stanza.
