BLUFFTON, Ohio -The Bluffton women’s soccer team finished off a thrilling victory behind a buzzer-beating goal from Brittany Huff (Union/Northmont) to earn a positive 3-2 result on Wednesday, Sept. 9. The win pushed the Beavers to 2-1 on the young season, while the Purple Raiders fell to 1-3.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 8th minute with Katie Goedecke’s first goal of the season and the lone tally of the stanza, as Mount Union went to the locker room with a 9-2 lead in the shots column.

The Beavers came out firing in the second period and finally broke through on a short-range tally from freshman Ashley Keller (Piqua/Lehman Catholic) in the 65th minute to tie the contest at 1-1. Just eight minutes later, Huff would break through with her first goal of the season on a free kick from near midfield, giving Bluffton its first advantage, but it was quickly taken away as the Purple Raiders responded with a goal of their own just eight seconds later to tie it back up. The final 15 minutes saw most of the play happening at the midfield, before Huff connected with the game-winner as the buzzer sounded to let Bluffton escape with the narrow win.

The Purple Raiders still outshot the home team 17-9 overall and 13-4 on goal despite falling short on the scoreboard. However, Ashley Knippen (Wapakoneta) proved to be a difference maker with 11 saves in the victory for Bluffton. Skylar Liming (St. Marys/Memorial) led the home team in shots with four, while Huff added two, both resulting in goals.

The Beavers look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Toledo to face Lourdes University on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. The women will then open a three-game home stand on Tuesday, Sept. 15, as they take on the Olivet College Comets at the Sears Complex. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Come support your Beavers!
