It's all at BFR summer camp for youth ages 5 to 12

Science, sports, experiencing new cultures, super heroes, time travel, Olympics and more

Science, sports, experiencing new cultures, super heroes, time travel and the Olympics are all part of Bluffton Family Recreation’s summer camp open to youths ages 5 to 12.

Registration for summer is now underway. Youth may participate the entire summer or may pick and choose weeks, depending upon the number of campers signed up each week.

The camp begins Tuesday, May 29, and continues weekdays through Aug. 25, according to Daniel Tinch, BFR executive director. No camp takes place on Memorial Day or July 4th.

Kaycee Rowe, a 2018 Bluffton University graduate, is the lead counselor. Each week is a new theme. On Tuesday, May 22, the community is invited to a Community Day event at BFR between the hours of 3 to 7 p.m. The summer camp counselors will be available from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to meet with the public.

Here are the details:
• Open to 5- to 12-year-olds
• Held Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Bring snacks, lunch and drinks
• $60 per week for members; $120 per week for non-members
• Only 24 spots are available per week
• Registration now underway, first-come, first-served basis
• Sign up online, by phone or in person

Weekly camp themes:

Sports Week: (May 29th-June 1st)
No Camp on Memorial Day, May 28

Come experience the exciting world of sports. Counselors will use a variety of drills and games to help campers experience many types of sports. Campers learn in an environment that emphasizes teamwork, positive attitudes and good sportsmanship.

Superheroes in training: (June 4th-June 8th)
Ever wonder what it would be like to be a super hero? Well, now you can. Campers will experience all the thrills of being their favorite super hero through a variety of games, arts and crafts and reading. Kids will have the opportunity to create their own superhero and experience the science behind superpowers.
Cost: BFR Member: $60 Program Participant: $120

Time Travel (June 11th-June 15th)
Campers get the opportunity to travel back in time and into the future. Explore music from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and now. Make tie dye shirts, build a futuristic invention and party at a disco.

Young Scientist: (June 18th-June 22nd)
Come learn and discover the world of science. Campers will be hands on in conducting their own science experiments. Kids will learn how to make their silly putty, rock candy, perform egg experiments and build their own volcano.

Lions, Tigers and Bears…Oh, My: (June 25th-June 29th)
Campers will have the opportunity to learn and discover new things about animals including identifying a variety of animal pelts. Kids will learn through educational activities, games, arts and crafts and build a mock zoo.

Gold Medalist: (July 2nd-July 6th)
No camp July 4th
Experience a variety of Olympic games. Kids will partake in games such as cup stacking, water balloon toss and multiple obstacle courses. Kids will learn the importance of teamwork in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. Campers will have the opportunity to create and represent their own Country during the BFR Gold Medalist Olympics.

Wilderness Week (July 9th-July 13th)
Come explore the outdoors with us! Campers will partake in activities including fishing, campfire cooking and campground preparation. We will have crafts such as paper plate fans to keep us cool during outside time, make your own butterfly feeder and pine cone bird feeder.

Travel the World: (July 16th-July 20th)
Come explore other cultures from around the world with us. Campers will have the opportunity to experience the music, arts and traditions from a variety of Countries. Kids will make head masks, African necklaces, Japanese Scrolls and more. Come enjoy learning what all the World has to offer.

Healthy Habits Camp: (July 23rd-July 27th)
Living and eating healthy has never been so much fun. Come explore your culinary skills with us as campers will create their own salsa, learn basic food and kitchen safety and learn where healthy food comes from. Make and put on your chef hats as we are hands on with our food.

Wacky Water Week (July 30th-Aug 3rd)
Come enjoy everything that is water. Campers will make their own slip and slide, water bed and participate in water games. Arts and crafts on the week will consist of erupting ice chalk paint, water filled piñatas.

Lights/Camera/Action: (Aug 6th-Aug 10th)
Experience all of Hollywood. Campers will write direct and star in their own movie, play games such as paparazzi. Enjoy being a movie star as campers conduct a red carpet award show for their fellow peers.

Wild Wild West: (Aug 13th-Aug 17th)
Strap on your boots, we’re going out west. Campers will get the full cowboy/cowgirl experience through activities such as hoe down dancing, arts and crafts and wrangler games.

Warlocks and Wizards: (Aug 20th-Aug 24th)
Transform yourself this summer through the magical world of Warlocks and wizards. Campers will make wands, play fantasy games, and create potions and spells. Come join us as we explore all that is magical.
