State treasurer's office recognizes BHS program

Compass Award given for efforts in financial literacy

Bluffton schools is one of two schools in the state to receive the Compass Award this month from the office of Ohio treasurer Robert Sprague, according to Greg Denecker, Bluffton superintendent.

The award commends programs working to guide Ohioans toward financial literacy and empowerment.

BHS teachers instrumental in the local recognition:
Michaeline Lovell, social studies teacher, who teaches Economics, with a heavy focus on personal finance.
Karen Falk, family and consumer science teacher, who teaches an elective class on personal finance.

Sprague’s office described the Bluffton HS program this way:
Bluffton High School blends traditional classroom and experiential learning opportunities to prepare students to make wise financial decisions.

Students enrolled in personal finance and economics courses use what they learn in the classroom to engage with financial professionals and learn more about how these topics impact their lives.

Additionally, the school has partnered with The Ohio State University Extension to offer the Real Money. Real World. program, where students apply their personal finance knowledge to make lifestyle and budgeting choices in an interactive simulation

Buckeye Career Center in Tuscarawas County was also recognized in May.
