University students contemplate the ‘voiceless’ at ICPF

Seven Bluffton University students spent the weekend of Jan. 31-Feb. 2 exploring practical ways to give voice to the voiceless.

Mary Schrag, Jacey Dehogues and Robin Adams attended the Intercollegiate Peace Fellowship conference—held this year at Eastern Mennonite University—along with fellow Bluffton students Kerry Bush, Matthew McCoy, Eliot Nofziger and Joe Schaer.

The annual peacebuilding conference addresses conflict worldwide and encourages attendees to adopt nonviolent conflict resolution methods.

Friday chamber breakfast topic: "Egosurfing: You, Your Business and Bluffton

Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce invites the public to its Friday, Feb. 14, breakfast meeting. Paula Scott of PS Editorial Services, Bluffton, will present a program on "Egosurfing: You, Your Business and Bluffton." A free workshop follows the presentation, which enables persons to ask specific questions about egosurfing.

A free breakfast, provided by Richland Manor, will be served from 7 to 7:30 a.m. The breakfast meeting, held in the third floor of the town hall, is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

The breakfast sponsor is The Bluffton Icon.

BFR shoe collection comes down to the wire with 3,750 collected; deadline to participate is Friday

Donations can be dropped off to BFR (215 Snider Road in Bluffton) during all building hours.

Friday, Feb. 14, is the last day for donations to the Used Shoe Drive underway at BFR Sports & Fitness.  Used shoes of any type, size and condition are welcome.  All donations will be sent to micro-enterprise operations across the world where items are cleaned and repaired for resale or dismantled for recycling.

As of Feb. 10 the total number of pairs collected was 3,750. That represents 150 bags of shoes.

Request from fire department

One of the results of lots of snow is fire hydrants getting covered. Jon Kinn, Bluffton fire department chief, asks residents to remove snow around hydrants in their neighborood. "It takes a few moments to clear a path in case of an emergency," Kinn said. "We would appreciate any assistance you can give us by clearing the snow away from the hydrant. Fire doubles in size every minute, so a minute or two delay getting hooked to a hydrant can make a significant difference in the ability to knock the fire down quickly."

Bluffton schools will be in session on Presidents' Day

Due to the many school day cancellations Bluffton schools will be in session on Presidents' Day, Monday, Feb. 17, according to Greg Denecker, superintendent.

Presidents' Day has traditionally been a holiday for Bluffton schools, but because of the many cancellations, this year it's a school day.

Village: Don't park your car in middle of roadway

The Village of Bluffton is experiencing issues with cars parking nearly in the middle of the roadway due to snow at the curbs on several streets, according to Jamie Mehaffie, village administrator.

It appears as though these vehicles are parking away from the curb so passengers can open the door and exit the vehicle, but then leaving the vehicle parked nearly in the middle of the driving lane. 

One vehicle was parked a mere three feet from the painted center line of South Main Street.
