Jammin' at the library tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Jammin' at the library's next informal gathering is Monday, Feb. 23.

It's from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and is an informal time for acoustic musicians. This program takes place on the main floor of the library during the winter months.

Florence Hunter celebrates 99th birthday

As a life-long resident of the Findlay/Bluffton area, to Florence Hunter "long" now has a special meaning. On Feb. 17 she celebrated her 99th birthday making her the eldest resident at Richland Manor, Bluffton. Members of her five-generation family, from as far away as Racine, Wis., helped her celebrate.

Gregg Luginbuhl juror for this year’s Kewpee art show

ArtSpace/Lima, downtown Lima, will host the 27th Annual Kewpee High School Art Invitational from Feb. 27 to April 11. The exhibition, which will feature cash awards, includes works in various categories, including sculpture, photography, painting, digital media, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture, jewelry, and drawing.

The Kewpee Exhibit is sponsored by Kewpee Restaurants of Lima, Ohio.

Artists from 21 area high schools including Bluffton will be exhibiting their work.  A total of 104 pieces will be in the exhibit.

Ice circles on the Riley - a rather rare occurrence

There are crop circles (you won't find them in Bluffton), and ice circles (and now you will find them in Bluffton).

Look closely at this photo.

It shows ice circles on the Riley. Brennan Davies noticed them on the Riley near Kimmit's Hill. (That's the bluff along Riley Street near Garmatter Street, for anyone under 40.)  He learned about the on the Weather Channel. 

Here's a definition from the Internet:

An ice disc, ice circle, or ice pan is a natural phenomenon that occurs in slow moving water in cold climates.

Hannah Chappell-Dick breaks the 5-minute mile

Don't tell Hannah Chappell-Dick to slow down.

The Bluffton HS grad, broke the five-minute barier for the first time as she charted a 4:56.37 in the mile at a recent USC Invitational. She runs indoor track for Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va.

In the race, she shattering her own school record of 5:05.65. The junior also sits at No. 4 in the nation this year with the time. She placed sixth at the meet, behind runners from Virginia Tech and North Carolina.
