Bluffton's white oak approaches its third century

Q: What is the oldest living object in Bluffton?

Hint: It’s birth occurred the same decade that Bach composed the Brandenburg Concertos, Russia’s Peter the Great ruled, Jonathan Swift wrote Gulliver’s Travels, and Europe explorers discovered Easter Island.

A: Bluffton’s oldest living thing is probably approaching three centuries in age. It’s the enormous white oak (Quercus alba) in the far section of Maple Grove Cemetery, estimated to have been planted in 1721.

Bluffton University will present “Arsenic and Old Lace” by Joseph Kesselring for the fall play from Oct. 31-Nov. 3. 

In “Arsenic and Old Lace,” theater critic Mortimer Brewster’s charming and charitable aunts have an usual ministry helping lonely boarders to their heavenly rest by serving poisoned elderberry wine.

The famous 1941 dark comedy features a nephew who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, a gangster on the run and unsuspecting police officers dropping in on the mayhem.

Still time to signup for Wednesday "Getting your house in order" workshop

Presented by four Bluffton business professionals

There's still time to sign-up for the Wednesday program -
Four Bluffton business professionals will offer free “Getting Your House In Order” workshops this fall.

Faith Investment Services, partnering with Fortman Insurance, Scott Basinger, attorney at law, and Neil Reichenbach, CPA, present workshops addressing basic questions about retirement, insurance coverage, taxes and similar subjects.

The first free workshop, is at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the front portion of Faith Investment Services building, 101 N. Main St., Bluffton.

SR 103 northbound I-75 entrance ramp closes on Thursday

Interstate 75 northbound entrance ramp at state Route 103, Bluffton, will close on Thursday, Oct. 17, for approximately one day for maintenance.  Traffic will be detoured onto state Route 235 and back to Interstate 75.

Bluffton Golf Club host to HCAC women's championship

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was crowned the 2019 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Women’s Golf Champions on Sunday. The meet took place at the Bluffton Golf Club.

This is the first time the Fightin’ Engineers have won the championship, punching their ticket to the 2020 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship. 

Rose-Hulman was dominant in claiming the title in the two-day championship, turning in a team score of 660, 39 strokes ahead of the nearest competition.

Openings available in this weekend's cemetery history walks

Interested in attending?  RSVP the library at 419-358-5016 or [email protected], indicating preferred day and time slot.

There are still openings available in each of the four Maple Grove Cemetery history walks at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20, sponsored by the Bluffton Icon. These free non-scary walks accept donations going to the Bluffton Public Library.

Each walk is limited to 12 persons and each walk covers the same material.
