Soup's on! Thursday cook-off at Maple Crest

Your supper plans for Thursday are already set. The soup is on.

Maple Crest Senior Living Village, Bluffton, hosts a soup cook-off on Thursday, Feb. 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the public is invited.

The event is in the Patio room in the lower level of the Maple Crest main building. there everyone can sample gourmet soups prepared by various local restaurants and caterers.

Concerning February's weather: Will someone please do something about it!

Everyone talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.

The Icon hopes someone does something.

According to Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer, the last day we experienced above freezing temperatures was on Wednesday, Feb. 11, when the thermometer reached all of 34 degrees.

We've only experience two February days with readings higher than 43. Thoses were two-day wonders, Feb. 7 and Feb. 8.

Meanwhile the "highest" low degree for February was 29 on Feb. 8.

"New and improved" cash mobs return - first one is Thursday at Black Lab

“New and improved” monthly cash mobs will continue in Bluffton in 2015, according to the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce. The project is in cooperation with a downtown merchant’s planning committee.

Cash mob fans have two events this month – (thanks to lousy January weather, the first mob was moved to February).

The first cash mob is Thursday, Feb. 19, at The Black Lab. The second – delayed from January – is the following Thursday, Feb. 26, at The Dough Hook. After this there will be on cash mob per month.

Baked spaghetti dinner fundraiser Feb. 18 at First United Methodist

A baked spaghetti dinner is planned at the First United Methodist Church from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18.

The fundraiser benefits the children's/youth missions and camp activities. There are a limited number of tickets at the door. Carryout is available. Call the church at 419-358-8921 for tickets in advance.

The church is located at 116 Church St., Bluffton. The event takes place in the church Fellowship Hall.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.

It’s ambitious, but not as impossible as it first appears.

Bluffton Friends of the Library and SHANNON Service Club joined together this winter to sponsor the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program through the Bluffton Public Library, according to Esther Birkey, youth services coordinator at the library. 

The program encourages early literacy development in the home. It is open to children from birth through the start of Kindergarten.
