Richard Smith

Richard M. Smith, 79 of Findlay died at 5:46 a.m. June 19, 2010, at Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay. He was born in Lima on Oct. 23, 1930, to Elmer S. and Claribell Miller Smith. On Dec. 28, 1951, he married Patricia Sherer and she preceded him in death on June 16, 1974.

Mr. Smith owned and operated Smitty's Barber Shop in Findlay and had been a partner in Dick and Jerry's Barber Shop in Bluffton. He enjoyed traveling, talking and history. He was a graduate of Lafayette High School, Toledo Barber College and a Korean War Veteran.

Kendra Pannabecker and her parents, Tom and Helen, Tucson, AZ., recently visited her grandma, Wanda Pannabecker, Bluffton.

How old are you?

I'm nine years old. I'll be in the fourth grade at Tully Elementary School in Tucson.

Where were you born?

Oh, I hate this question. I was born in China - close to Hong Kong. I was two years old when I was adopted.

What do you like to do in Bluffton?

I like to play croquet and go shopping in the Et Cetera Shop and just have a lazy time.

The Rockport United Methodist Church will hold its annual homemade ice cream social on Friday, July 2. The menu will consist of homemade ice cream, barbecue and chicken sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad, perfection salad, pies, cakes, coffee and punch.

The church is located at 5505 Rockport Road. The Pastor is Rev. Rich Rakay. The serving will start at 5 p.m.

The congregations of First Mennonite, Bluffton, and Grace Mennonite, Pandora, will worship together on Sunday, June 27, at Grace in Pandora.

Ed Diller, a native son of the Grace congregation and moderator of Mennonite Church USA, is the speaker. Worship is at 10:30 a.m.A fellowship meal will follow the service.

Here is Ruby Murray's first grade during the 1954-55 school year. These students are members of the Bluffton High School class of 1967. The photo was taken on the front steps of the "old " grade school. It was the final year that the old building was used. We see several familiar faces and hope that Michael Zimmerman takes it upon himself to provide us with a proper row-by-row identification. Leland Gerber was the photographer.

When I visited Bluffton recently, I was impressed with all of the beautiful planters along Main Street from Stratton's Greenhouse. What a lovely way to add to the charm and beauty of the community.

Ohio offers several specialty license plates for drivers. One of those recognizes adoption. The Icon spotted this adoption plate on Main Street.

Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio will hold an informational seminar aimed at for improving and enriching persons lives. The event, titled "Embracing aging with knowledge," is at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 24, at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.

The seminars are free and open to the public. This topic of the June 24 seminar is community services. Four persons will give presentations.
