Jean Moore, 91 of Allen Park, Mich., died at 6:35 p.m. April 6, 2011 at Charlotte Stephenson Manor, Adrian, Mich.

On July 5, 1919 she was born to Leonard and Ida (Mann) Zimmerly, rural Pandora. At Pandora High School Jean played on the varsity championship basketball team.

After marrying Dale Moore in 1939, they lived in Allen Park, Mich., spanning 64 years. He died March 3, 2006. There she taught Sunday School for 15 years, was an aide to the physically handicapped for 6 years.

Oliver W. Schutz

Oliver W. Schutz, 88, of Pandora died at 7:11 pm April 6, 2011 at his residence. He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Pandora to Edward E. and Estella Hilty Schutz. On Aug. 5, 1950 he married Rachel Eicher on Aug. 5, 1950 and she survives.

Oliver was a farmer and also drove truck. He was a member of Grace Mennonite Church, Pandora. He sang in the church choir, the Swiss Male Chorus, the Bluffton Choral Society and at First Mennonite Church in Berne, Ind.

Mr. Schutz was a 1940 graduate of Pandora High School and was a WWII Army veteran.

Edith Lehman 1925-2012

Edith J. Lehman, 85, of Bluffton died 2:14 a.m. April 7, 2011, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. She was born Nov. 27, 1925, in Normal, Ill., to Earl and Florence Guth Stuckey. On Sept. 29, 1945, she married Earl W. Lehman and he survives.

Mrs. Lehman was a piano teacher and accompanist. She was also a partner in Reistman's Clothing Store, Bluffton. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church, Bluffton and the Telesis Club.

She was a graduate of Morton, (Ill.) High School and attended Bluffton College.

The 23rd annual Bluffton High School Occupational Work Education (OWE) silent auction is from noon to 6 p.m., Thursday, April 14, at Bluffton McDonald's, according to Pat Pritchard, OWE teacher.

The event has over 70 biddable items that benefit the OWE program and The Ronald McDonald House.

Since the auction's inception, over $21,000 has been donated by the auctions to the Ronald McDonald House. In addition Bluffton High School OWE students have purchased $5,700 in classroom equipment from the auction.

Bill Croft and Vanessa Greer of the Bluffton Lions Club stand with Jerry and Lori Lewis

Jerry and Lori Lewis, of Jerry Lewis McDonald's Restaurant, were named Bluffton Lions Club citizen of the year for 2010 on March 29.

The couple join a long list of Bluffton residents recognized over the years by the Bluffton Lions Club. This was the 30th year for the award to be presented.

Jerry and Lori Lewis have assisted countless programs in the Bluffton community. These include athletics, the arts, churches, education and individual families.

John Geiser, BHS grad, sent it to us recently. Here's what he says about the photo:

"I ran across some pictures when scanning slides left from my dad that have both my brother and myself puzzled. These were taken in the time frame of '61 to '63.

"My mom is standing in the one but the location is a mystery. I also have a couple pictures of dad's business from that era also. Notice the phone number on the spoon holder (advertising handouts in the late 1950's).

Don Hurless with Meredith Bixel

Meredith Bixel, a senior at Bluffton High School and daughter of Dean and Brenda Bixel of Bluffton, was the recipient of the Hurless Award on April 2.

The $500 award was given to her by Don Hurless in memory of his late wife, at the 51st annual Young Artists Competition at the Ohio State University in Lima.

Meredith competed in the competition which is sponsored by the Friends of the Symphony. She performed the Piano Concerto Opus 23 No. 2 in D minor by Edward MacDowell and was accompanied by Kathleen Price who is also her piano teacher.
