Jeremy Basinger, Mike Liska and Jené Sommers are participating in a cross-cultural experience in the Holy Land, May 5-22.

They and other Bluffton University students will survey the geography and archeology of the region by visiting significant biblical and historical sites and by meeting with Israeli and Palestinian people. They will walk where Jesus walked, float in the Dead Sea and eat St. Peter’s fish at the Sea of Galilee.

You had a mother, too? So did I. 

With Mother’s Day fresh on my mind, allow me to share with you some important things my mother taught me. Maybe after reading this, you’ll think of some things your mom taught you.

Don't tell us that you didn't buy anything at the arts and crafts show! How about the farmers' market? How about some food?

Okay, then, did you listen to any of the musical entertainment? Did you think about riding the ponies, or talking with the llamas?

Certainly you drank a cup of coffee, sipped a snow cone or bought some gourmet popcorn - or just a $1 bag fo popcorn. Did you have some homemade ice cream? Did you win something from the fishing pond? 

What was your favorite craft booth?

Joel R. Kimmel, 92, of Bluffton died at 8 a.m. May 10, 2014 at the Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora. He was born July 18, 1921, in Lima to the late Leslie and Minnie Bigler Kimmel. 

On Aug. 17, 1947 he married Rebecca Hofstetter and she preceded him in death on Dec. 10, 1989.  He then married Madlyn Isham Marquart on June 15, 1991, and she died March 10, 2012. 

Shuffleboard anyone?

The Bluffton Shuffleboard Club will host a free demonstration and open house for all adult interested in learning the game of shuffleboard or more about the Bluffton club, according to Ralph Peterson, club president.

The event is at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 17, on the courts in Buckeye Park off Spring Street.

The club meets regularly throughout the summer for informal mixers on Mondays and Saturdays at 10 a.m., Thursdays at 4 p.m., and hosts seven tournaments during the season.

Julian Harnish, son of Steve and Monica Harnish and student of Dr. Lucia
Unrau, will present a piano recital at 7 p.m., Sunday, May 18 in Yoder
Recital Hall. He will perform works by Bach, Bartok, Chopin, Liszt and
Mozart. Julian will also accompany guest soloist Perry Maddox performing
Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Oboe Concerto in A minor. Perry, a second cousin
to Julian, is an oboe and environmental science major at the University of
Michigan.

The public is invited to attend the May meeting of The Western Ohio Chapter of the Lincoln Highway Association, which will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20 at the Western Sizzlin Restaurant, 2721 Elida Rd., Lima.

The April Student of the Month at Bluffton High School is Kathryn Basinger, daughter of David and Lora Basinger, Bluffton.

Kathryn has a GPA of 3.926. She is involved in Latin Club, Math Club, and the National Junior Classical League Latin Honor Society. She is also on the BHS volleyball team. 

She is a member at Ebenezer Mennonite Church in Bluffton. She enjoys horse back riding and running in her spare time. She had been awarded the American Legion American and Government Award.

Kathryn is currently undecided regarding her future plans for college.

Isaac Schumacher, son of Tim and Janet Schumacher of Bluffton, is participating in a cross-cultural experience in Iceland, May 6-21.

He and other Bluffton students will explore the political history of Iceland, an island nation that has no standing army and does not take sides in international disputes. They will also learn about emerging energy technologies such as geothermal and hydropower. Participants will also visit Höfoi House, where a summit meeting between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev was held in 1986.
