Rockport United Methodist Church will hold their annual Memorial Day service on Monday, May 26, 2014.

The service will start at 11 a.m. in the cemetery and will progress to the church. The guest speaker will be Greg Coleman, Pastor of Cairo and Rockport United Methodist Churches.

The church is located at 5505 Rockport Road, Columbus Grove. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The May Student of the Month at Bluffton High School is 12th grade student Andrew Lee, son of Dennis & Cindy Lee, Bluffton. He has a current GPA of 3.820.

Andrew is a member of Math Club, SADD Club, Spanish Club and Show Choir. He also attends a weekly small group Bible study.

He has been a member of the track team and the football team for the past 4 years. He was captain of the football team, was a 3-year varsity award winner in both football and track and was a scholar-athlete for the past 3 years.

Hilty Home, Pandora, is the recipient of a $39,600 Safety Intervention Grant check, presented May 12 by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC), according to Jason Cox, Hilty Home administrator.

Steve Buehrer, administrator, CEO of Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, presented the check.

The grant enables Hilty Home to purchase lift systems to protect employees from injury by easing the process of transferring patients.

The Village of Beaverdam will dedicate its new town hall at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, May 18, according to Roberta Beemer, Beaverdam mayor.

The new town hall is located at 101 W. Main St., Beaverdam and will be open to the public in an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Construction of the new town hall was begun in 2013 and was completed earlier this year.

The Northwest Conference track meet takes place Thursday and Saturday, May 15 and 17 at Spencerville High School. 

On Thursday, the field events will begin at 4:45 p.m. with running events start at 5 p.m.  Saturday field events start at 10:30 a.m. and running finals at 12:30 p.m.

Results will be posted on Baum's page as soon as possible following the meet events on Thursday and Saturday. 

Bluffton High School's baseball team defeated Allen East 3-0 in the opening sectional tournament game on May 10. The Pirates face Ottawa-Glandorf on the road on Thursday, May 15.

Julian Harnish, a senior at Bluffton High School, shared his gift of music with Maple Crest elders in an outstanding piano recital on May 11.

The classic composers were covered with the performance. Julian began piano lessons at age 5 and has been playing ever since. His current teacher is Lucia Unrau of Bluffton University, and his next recital will be at Bluffton University on May 18. 

Among those attending his Maple Crest performance was his former piano teacher, Wanda Pannabecker, a Maple Crest resident.

Nicole Langhals is the 2014 winner of the Barbara Fleming Memorial Scholarship sponsored by Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio, Bluffton and Pandora (MHCO). 

Nicole is a 2012 graduate of Columbus Grove High School and is currently enrolled at the University of Akron in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. She is the daughter of Doug and Mary Langhals of rural Columbus Grove.

This annual award of $500 provides scholarship support to an individual pursuing a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse, a Registered Nurse or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. 

 

The Bluffton University baseball team had six players earn All-Heartland Conference honors following the 2014 campaign, including Freshman of the Year Luke Hickey (Toledo/Whitmer), one of two Beavers selected to the First Team. Tim Webb (Delaware/Worthington Christian) joined Hickey with his First Team All-HCAC selection. Seniors David Ianiro (Highland Heights/Mayfield) and Christian Vail (Lucas) secured Second Team All-HCAC honors while junior Jake Townley (Mansfield/Madison) and senior Ben Roeschley (Graymont, Ill./Flanagan) both collected honorable mention recognition.
