Including an average of two plastic surgeries each week

Albert Loayza, RN, surgical first assistant at Bluffton Hospital, puts it this way: “Our hospital is small, but our care is big.”

Last year that “small” Bluffton Hospital surgical department handled 4,500 procedures, a number that may surprise most Icon viewers.

Bluffton’s surgical specialties include general, obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN), facial plastic, pediatric, urology, gastro-intestinal and ear, nose and throat surgery.

Bluffton High School sophomores will visit Apollo Career Center's 411Blast, Friday, Jan. 26.

Approximately 700 sophomores in Apollo Career Center’s 11-member district will also participate.
 
This day exposes students to possibilities and paths available for their career and/or college success. Students choose two programs of interest and then spend one-half day visiting those labs, meeting the instructors and participating in fun, interactive demos and activities.

An exhibit featuring the work of art professors from Goshen College will be featured in Bluffton University’s Grace Albrecht Gallery, located in the Sauder Visual Arts Center. Opening Feb. 1, the exhibit is free and open to the public through Feb. 23. 

Bluffton Diamond Sports spring softball and baseball sign-up underway

It may be mid-January, but a sports-minded Bluffton group is thinking about baseball and softball.

Bluffton Diamond Sports is accepting registrations for this spring’s seasons for:
• Baseball - ages 7 through 8th grade
• Softball - ages 8 through 8th grade

Owen Weaver touched the lives of the community

Owen Richard Weaver, 10, died Jan. 17, 2018, at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. Owen was born Aug. 14, 2007, in Lima to Chad and Melissa (Badgett) Weaver.

Owen was a 4th grader at Marimor Schools in Lima. He played in the Abilities Baseball League in Lima. Owen was a happy boy who loved school, people, and his dog, Ace. Owen had an exceptional bond with his three brothers. 

The Findlay∙Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with AAA Travel, is offering the community the chance to experience Switzerland, Austria, and Bavaria.

This 10-day trip is July 19 through July 28, 2018. Those who book before Jan. 20, can save $250 per person. AAA members can receive an additional $50 off per person.

Included in the trip is round trip air from Detroit Metro Airport, transportation to and from the airport, all abroad transportation, hotel accommodations, and twelve meals – eight buffet breakfasts and four dinners.

Interstate 75 southbound, just north of state Route 309 (mile marker 125.6), Lima, will be restricted to one lane through the work zone for one day only on Thursday, Jan. 18.

The lane closure is required during guard rail repair. The restriction is expected to be in place by 8 a.m. and be removed by 3 p.m.

Work is being performed by the ODOT District 1 Roadway Services department. Traffic control by the ODOT Allen County maintenance garage.

Sarah Thompson, 2018 Generations Fellow, Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, will present Bluffton University’s 2018 Keeney Peace Lecture during the Jan. 30 Forum, “From Charlottesville to Congo to Cleveland: The State of Nonviolence,” at 11 a.m. in Yoder Recital Hall.

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University men tipped off in the Sommer Center against the Manchester Spartans on a cold Wednesday, Jan. 17. The Beavers pulled off a 71-66 win over the Spartans, improving to 8-8 overall (5-4 HCAC) with their third straight victory, while the visitors fell to 2-14 on the season (0-9 HCAC).
