Carson Soper led Bluffton with 16 points • Nic Essinger tallied a season-high 14 points

BLUFFTON - Host Bluffton lost 65-58 to Lincolnview in a closely-contested Northwest Conference boys basketball match Friday night.

The Pirates led 14-13 after the opening stanza despite three trifectas from Lincolnview senior guard Clayton Leeth. But the Lancers won the second period 18-11 to take a 31-25 lead at halftime.

The Lancers narrowly out-pointed Bluffton 34-33 in the second half. Lincolnview canned six of seven foul shots in the final quarter, and shot 8-9 at the line in the second half.

Laykin Garmatter fired in 10 of her game-high 17 points in the first period

BLUFFTON - Homestanding Bluffton shot its way to a big early lead and went on to whip local rival Pandora-Gilboa 56-32 in a lopsided non-conference girls basketball matchup Saturday afternoon.

Laykin Garmatter fired in 10 of her game-high 17 points in the first period to lead the Lady Pirates to a 20-6 advantage. 

Bluffton extended its margin to 32-13 at halftime, and they outscored the Lady Rockets 14-9 in the third stanza to build a 46-22 cushion.

The teams played to a 10-10 final quarter after the outcome was decided.

Hit 25 treys and surpass 100 points; Donley sets record with 9 triples

BLUFFTON - Red-hot host Bluffton tossed in a school-record 25 three-point goals and surpassed the century mark in a 101-46 rout of local non-conference rival Cory-Rawson Saturday night in a historic Pirate boys basketball blowout. 

Pirate Trenton Donley splashed five trifectas in the third period to lead a 33-12 Bluffton outburst. He netted 31 points by draining a school single-game record nine triples.

Robert "Bob" Lee Plaugher, 81, died Jan. 15, 2021, at his residence.  Bob was born March 12, 1939, in Lima to the late Raymond and Dorothea (Burns) Plaugher who preceded him in death. On May 19, 1962, he married Rita Mae Plaugher, they were later divorced and she survives in Lima. 

Bob graduated from Lima Senior High School. He worked for and retired from Scot Lad Foods after 30-plus years. Bob was also self-employed hauling livestock and hay over the countryside after retirement. He also was a farmer and had worked at the Beaverdam Elevator.

It’s  a 1924 or ’25 Ford Model T “Doctors” Coupe. The picture was taken in a barnyard on his parent’s farm on Columbus Grove Road midway between Pandora Road and State Route 696. His parents were Sam and Sarah (Neuenschwander) Steiner.

Indoor track, men's basketball and women's basketball results

Here are stories involving recent Bluffton University men's and women's basketball and indoor track.

Indoor track
The Bluffton University Beavers kicked off their indoor track season with the "2021 Friday Night Spikes Opener" at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were unable to compete in an outdoor track season, so this was the first live competition the Beavers had seen since the 2020 indoor track season.

Icon: You graduated from Bluffton High School in 2019. What have you been doing since then?
I’ve been attending Bluffton University, majoring in Elementary Education and Intervention Specialist. I’m involved in my church, St. John Mennonite, and in the Concert Band here at the university.

What are your goals after you graduate?
I want to teach elementary school and start working towards my master's in school administration.

The 1931 BHS graduate held several school athletic records • One still stands

Howard Triplehorn, who graduated from Bluffton High School in 1931, was the first Pirate to play in the Big Ten.

At one time three Bluffton High School athletic records belonged to Triplehorn, who eventually played football at the University of Michigan. He held several additional athletic records at BHS, which are in this article.

His records included the BHS football’s career scoring title at 345 points (it stood for 70 seasons when Zac Kohli scored 354 points in 2001).
