Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS) has announced that Renee Smith, MD will become its new chief medical officer (CMO).

Dr. Smith comes to BVHS from Aspirus Network, Inc. (ANI), a clinically integrated provider network in Wausau, Wisconsin with more than 1,100 physicians, advanced practice clinicians and other providers with 110 practices. Most recently, she served ANI in the capacity of executive director (since 2016) and as medical branch director–emergency operations center (since 2020).

The Bluffton Board of Education met in the Elementary School media center on October 18 with an audience of nine including the Bluffton Icon.

Among contracts approved by the board was bus driver Deborah Hilty, hired for a 60 day trial period at 4 hours per day.

Middle school principal Josh Kauffman noted that amidst the tight hiring market for drivers, that “knock on wood,” the Bluffton schools are in good shape with drivers and substitute drivers.

The Bluffton volleyball team lost a five-set nailbiter to visiting Van Buren in the Div. III sectional semifinals Monday evening, October 18.

The Lady Pirates won sets two and four in close battles to force a decisive fifth game. But VB took the first, third and fifth sets to eke out the win.

Bluffton's season record ended up 13-10. Five seniors played their final match for the Pirates in the gut-wrenching 25-12, 30-32, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12 defeat.

VB improved to 17-5 with the tournament victory, their second win over the Pirates in less than a week.

Bluffton High School graduate Trevor Bassitt (2017) visited the 7th and 8th graders at Bluffton Middle School on Homecoming Friday, October 15, 2021. Bassitt, who reached the 400-meter hurdles finals in the United States Olympic Team Trials in June, responded to a standing invitation from teacher Robin Ault.

The Bluffton Exempted Village Schools provided the attached agenda for the 7:30 p.m., October 18, 2021 meeting of the Board of Education in the Elementary Media Center, 102 S Jackson St.

The Bluffton University men's golf team wrapped up its 2021 fall slate with a 332 on Sunday, Oct. 17. Bluffton's 667 at the Denison Fall Invitational put the Beavers in 8th place following 36 holes at the Cumberland Trail Golf Club.

Junior Clay Quellhorst (St. Marys/Memorial) and senior Dominic Castelvetere (Ontario) both put 81's on the board Sunday. Freshman Hunter Jolliff (Elida) chipped in with an 84 as he and Quellhorst topped the Beavers with identical scores of 165 for the weekend.

The Bluffton University women's soccer team dropped a 5-2 decision to Anderson University on a beautiful Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021. Bluffton fell to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the Heartland Conference following the Senior Day setback. Anderson improved to 6-5-2 and 5-0-1 in the HCAC.

Trailing 2-0 coming out of the break, Bluffton cut its deficit in half when senior Shawn Broadhurst (Belleville, MI/Belleville) delivered a strike to Nina McGinn (Marion/Harding) who drove home her second goal of the season.

The Bluffton University men's soccer team had its school-record three-match HCAC winning streak snapped by Anderson University on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021. The Ravens ruined Senior Day as they improved to 7-6-2 and 4-0-2 in the conference. Bluffton fell to 7-5 and 3-3 in the Heartland.
