The Bluffton University volleyball team welcomed back fans with a three-set shutout of Kenyon College on Wednesday, Sept. 1. Bluffton was in front of fans for the first time since 2019.

Bluffton took set one by a 25-15 count. Set two was a 25-18 Beaver victory and the capper score was 25-14.

Junior All-HCAC performer Kaylie Campbell (Camden/Preble Shawnee) picked up where she left off in February, hitting .500 with eight kills against one error on 14 swings. Sophomore Alysha Like (McComb) provided eight kills of her own and a .350 hitting percentage.

The Bluffton University women's soccer team opened up its season at home on a very comfortable Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, against Oberlin College. Despite a strong effort from the Beavers, an early goal from Oberlin powered them to a 4-0 defeat of the home team. Bluffton fell to 0-1 on the season, while Oberlin (1-0) secured its first victory of the year.

The visitors netted a shot just over three minutes into the match for an early 1-0 lead. Another first half goal, followed by two more late in the second half, led the Yeowomen to a 4-0 victory over the Beavers.

The Ohio History Connection recently featured the digitization of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps for the Open Access Kent State collection and invited viewers to look for their town's map.

The visiting Bluffton volleyball team was swept at Shawnee Tuesday night, August 31, in a non-league clash.

The Pirate girls fell to 2-2 after the defeat, while Shawnee improved to 3-1 with the win.

Senior middle hitter Kylie Stackhouse led the Pirates with six kills and three blocks.

Bluffton senior setter Skyler Scoles dished out 14 assists and added three blocks.

Karrington Green led Shawnee with 10 kills, nine digs and four aces. Grace Freiberger came up with 17 digs, while setter Addison Maxwell passed out 21 assists and added two blocks.

Dorothy R. Houts, 99, passed away August 31, 2021 at Willow Ridge-Betty House in Bluffton. Dorothy was born August 12, 1922 in Bluffton to the late Albert and Sylvia (Basinger) Garmatter. On January 10, 1942 she married Clifford Houts who preceded her in death on September 4, 1997.

The host Bluffton girls tennis team lost to Ottawa-Glandorf 5-0 on Tuesday evening, August 31.

The Lady Pirate netters fell to 2-6 with the defeat. 

Senior Ellie Nickel came closest to posting a Bluffton win at third singles. She lost a third set tiebreaker 13-11 after winning the first set 6-1 and dropping set two, 6-4.

Sophomore Brooke Camper lost a tough match at first singles 6-1, 7-5. O-G won the other three matches handily in straight sets.

The Pirates play in the Elida Invitational Saturday, Sept. 4.
