In commemoration of the sacrifices of four armed forces chaplains during World War II, The American Legion will observe Religious Emphasis Week Feb. 1 to 7 and Four Chaplains' Sunday, according to members of the Bluffton American Legion Post 382.

Members of the Bluffton Legion Post will attend the 10:30 a.m. Feb. 5 worship service at First United Methodist Church, Bluffton.

This year is the 68th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Dorchester and the heroism demonstrated by four chaplains on the ship. The

Bernice Deerhake Gibson

Bernice Deerhake Gibson, 93, of Lima died at 7:05 p.m. Jan. 25, 2012 at Lima Manor. She was born Jan. 25, 1919, in Bluffton to Albert and Bertha Amstutz Matter.

On July 14, 1941, she married Robert Deerhake and he preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1977. In 1982 she married Robert Gibson and they were later divorced.

Bernice retired from Triplett Corp. Bluffton. She was a 1936 graduate of Bluffton High School.

The Board of Trustees of Bluffton Public Library has announced its meeting schedule for 2012. Meetings will be held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the library's Riley Board Room at 145 South Main St., Bluffton. No meetings will take place in July or December.

Board members are Elizabeth Hostetler, president; Bob Beer, vice president; Carrie Phillips, secretary; Emily Goldsberry, Amy Lehman-Mikesell, Robert Scott and Nancy Yeager.

Board meetings are open to the public.

Rita Gorman

Rita Elizabeth Finn Gorman, 98, of Lima, died at 4:50 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at St. Francis Home in Tiffin, where she had lived for the last several years.

She was born July 11, 1913, in Lima to Patrick and Molly Finn. On Oct. 12, 1933, she married Thomas J. Gorman and he preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 1978.

Mrs. Gorman was a member of the St. Rose Parish, Lima, and was a member of the altar Rosary Society.

She retired from St. Rita's Medical Center in 1978 where she had worked in housekeeping for 17 years.

The Bluffton University women defeated Earlham College 69-61 on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012. The Beavers improved to 7-11 and 5-6 in HCAC with their school-record fifth straight Heartland Conference win. Earlham slipped to 3-15 overall and 1-10 in the HCAC.
